Dwarf child drowned in my well
So is this going to be an issue lol, and is this something that can happen?
Only 20 hours play time in the game, this is my "first" fortress that I have learned enough to get 120 dwarfs and 2+ years in.
Might be time for a fresh start regardless, I need to focus on setting up work orders. As I was mainly just doing everything mainly, and it's become a monster now lol.

Why take responsibility for something what you did not do. Children will get killed in million different ways and you should be happy about them clearing out of gene pool.

Then again, if you do not want to make their life safer, just keep children in burrowed all time mostly inside castle and nowhere near water or lava. They do not always follow burrows but they usually come back to it soon enough.

Oh I'm not bothered the kid drowned, just didn't know they could fall down a well.
And if the body will cause issue for the well.

You have 120 dwarfs and not using standing orders?

Wow, getting a manager and a book keeper are my top priorities when setting up a new fort.

It's not an 'event' if that's what you're asking.

Any dwarf can fall into a well under the right circumstances. Something along the lines of 'I was in combat with someone and did a cool dodge out of the way of their punch and now I'm standing over an open chasm.' or some such.

Consider a stairwell next to your well...well. You can put a hatch cover over the top stair so it won't be so obvious, and people who fall in can, eventually, climb their way out.

Outside of booze, meals and a few other task I didn't really have standing orders to automate stuff. And now as the waves of people showing up it's got out of hand.

My first couple of forts got little to no immigrants, because I hadn't set any home.
So this current fort it's been made clear to me how important it is to manage it.

The only stuff I make manually are 2 tables, 2 chairs, 2 doors. After the two offices are set up I standing order everything I want to make.

This.

Don't even worry about automation. Tell the manager you want 30 tables made and every carpenter workshop across the fortress will queue up jobs for you.

I've been battling aquifer flooding for years and finally decided to abandon the upper levels and get far enough under it so it's not a problem anymore. Due to constant pools of water, I never got around to installing much furniture. Somehow, for some reason, without a single piece of furniture or door installed, never crafted a table or chair, my population has grown to 94. It was about 42 a couple seasons ago, jumped to 72 all of the sudden, and while I was preparing a housing area more immigrants came in. I have no idea why.

Welcome to your new house. Now get to work.

Edit: My mistake, there are 10 beds in the future barracks that doesn't even have walls yet.
