Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress

Steam or Standalone?
I have been playing Some Kenshi and Rimmworld, so i thought next it would be nice to try Dwarf Fortress.
Are there Any differences beyond the Graphics to the free version?
Can i get a similar experience by modding the free version or is it worth to spend the 28€ on here?

You can try the older version with graphic sets (download Lazy Newb Pack). If you like it, you can get the Steam version.

There is no difference between the graphic and the free version.

As for the free version of the Steam product, it does not really work as advertised.
not sure what to make of your comment.
From what i was able to find the steam and free version only differ in terms of sound track and graphics.
They should have the same gameplay features?
If not care to list the differences?
Both versions are currently on 50.11

Steam is playable by normal humans the free version is for people who are beyond any of us mortals

Is it that hard to follow the link I gave?

I wouldn't pay much attention to the guy. he's a known troll/point farmer around here. Tends to post his reviews and other posts every now and then to farm even more points.

Don't pay attention to anything I say, it's obviously a total nonsense.
I gave you the points you asked for, never say DF players aren't charitable, don't spend them all in one place.

If you can handle the jank of Kenshi than Dwarf Fortress shouldn't be too hard to jump into, especially if you liked the base building part of Kenshi. Honestly modding the free version is the best option until adventure mode comes out. Right now v50 is a bit of a mess. With graphics mods the hard part of classic DF just becomes the controls, which are really tough to get used to, so getting the free version depends on whether or not you can handle that.

Ignore the people spouting their opinions on the game in the replies. Your free to form your own. I recommend trying out v.47 if you don't feel like spending 30$ and If you somehow like it even a little bit then this is a great purchase

Does the interface resize with the map in ASCII art mode?
Are the buttons missing in the screens I listed or is it just me failing to see them?
Would you say the interface for building bridges, pumps, waterwheels or axles is as usable as with the paying version?
Would you say the regression to circa 2008 tilesets and restriction to 8x12 characters is just an opinion I spouted, or rather another hard fact?
As hard as it might be to wrap your head around, there are people who like premium Dwarf Fortress, the OP could be one of them if he tried it, maybe not. Also, if you bothered to actually take me seriously and read what I said instead of immediately fixating on a single sentence, you could see I'm talking about v.47. Current classic is near unplayable; I agree with you there.

At this rate, you'll soon accuse me of putting words in your mouth.

But of course, it's all about opinions in the end.
Flat Earth, round Earth , whichever you like best.
I assume that you are agreeing with me? Or maybe you just have nothing to say. Either way theres no point derailing this thread because of it.

I wasn't even specifically addressing you when I said that. Assuming so is near narcissistic. I hate blind defending of the game just as much as you do. But talking about being blind, your reaction of jumping to assumptions and insulting people only cements this "praetorian guard"s opinion of you.

Give OP your take and move on.

Is adventure mode really the lynch pin, though?

How will that make the main game less of a mess?

This just seems just like something people have become accustomed to saying or excusing without actually meaning what they're talking about.

Personally I'm having fun so it doesn't matter to me. But it seems strange to me that a half-assed mode to let you play your fortress like rail tycoon lets you ride a train you built is the deal breaker.

EDIT: like is there honestly a larger audience of Dwarf Fortress limping through half baked RPG mechanics in adventure? It really seems like something that's just kinda 'nifty' and not really adding value or substance like fixed or new mechanics would in fortress

40 pages of posts only in DF forum, full of gems like calling a 20-years-old passion project with no guarantee of success "a scam," do point in that direction.

None of that matters.

i still dont get the problem. The askii looks like ♥♥♥♥♥, why would anyone want to use that.
And i dont realy mind some Jank, kenshi is full of it.
Rimmworld is janky and unpolished aswell in my opinion. (but most of the community will disagree)
I just care if the core gameplay is fun and that the jank doesnt take away from it.

Not like you had to play ASCII graphics even in .34, either. The tilesets were quick to appear, for a reason.

Personally still prefer the old UI. It lets you do a lot more, even ignoring how absolutely horrible alert system is in Steam version. Also, once you learned key combinations for stuff, muscle memory kicks in to make it so much easier than clicking several different elements on various parts of the screen.

Pretty much why I went back to playing pre-Steam version for now.
