Have a look at the justice menu, you will most likely find the answer there.
ohh. wow.. so he is just beating up bad guys.. yea I do not have a jail or anything like that maybe I need one haha... thanks. I would have thought it would at least tell me why he was beating them up.
If you do assign one, you can give them blunt weapons made from light materials, like featherwood or adamantine. They will not be able to kill anyone, probably.
Not having one can work out as well but some dwarves get unhappy thoughts when crimes are not punished.
In both cases the justice system tells you who commited what crime (or gives you ways to investigate depending on the crime.
If you have frequent beatings it is likely that they (and you) didn't respect what the noble ordered (bans on the export of certain items or production of those items usually).
