My captain of the guard constantly beats people up....
So my captain of the guard.. every few days in the inn just randomly beats up a person..

I'll get a notification "so and so guard captain is fighting.. then go over there and usually the other person is unconscious and gets taken to the hospital and fixed up... then a few minutes later he is back at it.. ?? lol.. like what the hell.

ALSO, he is in one of my squads.. and the other 4 guys are in the barracks but he hangs out in the inn most of the time.?

I don't understand if this is normal? Nobody in my fortress is unhappy I have one person who has a frownie face that's it.

Unless your captain of the guard is very unhappy and is starting fights, it's more likely that the people he beats are criminals and you don't have space in jail for them so the result is a beating.

Have a look at the justice menu, you will most likely find the answer there.

ohh. wow.. so he is just beating up bad guys.. yea I do not have a jail or anything like that maybe I need one haha... thanks. I would have thought it would at least tell me why he was beating them up.

For starters, you don't need a captain of the guard. You can completely ignore that feature until you feel like using it.

If you do assign one, you can give them blunt weapons made from light materials, like featherwood or adamantine. They will not be able to kill anyone, probably.

The captain of the guard's whole job is to take care of the justice system in your fort, so if you have one asigned you most likely want to make a jail with several chains built in it.

Not having one can work out as well but some dwarves get unhappy thoughts when crimes are not punished.

In both cases the justice system tells you who commited what crime (or gives you ways to investigate depending on the crime.

If you have frequent beatings it is likely that they (and you) didn't respect what the noble ordered (bans on the export of certain items or production of those items usually).

OK good info all around. I definitely have never sold/traded any banned goods. I only trade gems and they have never been on the ban list. I think I made the captain of the guard because I was confused thinking I needed him but I really needed the militia captain for squads. So maybe I'll either just get rid of him or set up a jail.

thank you
