I guess this is not totally implemented because it cause some problems for some dwarfs
without dfhack you can force them spend time togetter so they get to know each other closer and develop friendship/relationship
Even dfhack cant really change dwarfs sex. It technically does but log prefix stays as she/he like before. You can purge extra male/female for anytime and wait for migrant wave and keep your prefered sex:)
I always try to get a farmers and a metalworkers guild as soon as possible. Even my woodcutter and carpeter are usually either farmers or metalworkers.
If you split your population to thise two professions, they will quickly make friends in their respective guild halls and may even form couples. But they need a lot of leiser time off.
If you have a tavern, they usually spend most of their time there making friends across professions.
However, as they need leisure time to socialize and make friends, it's usually not doable in the early stage of a fort when there is too much to do and not enough workforce.
