Dwarf Fortress

limit the population
As i learn to play this game I would like my population to stay under 20 until I'm ready to expand. Trying to watch for the migration alert and then manually kicking out people is tedious. Ideas on how to maintain a pop limit of my choosing?

In the Settings there are 2 population cap options under the Game-Tab

I believe you can yes,if you go to Settings>Game>Population Cap, then type in 20, by default it seems to be 200.

If this game is anything like the free version, you should be able to deeply customize your game experience.

Cool but I may want to change that number throughout the game, will have to test and see if it can be made on the fly

Changes can be made on the fly. The first population cap setting restricts migrants, while the strict cap also restricts births (technically, restricts conception - you can still go over the cap by the number of conceptions that take place while the population is still under the cap). There are also settings for child percentage that you may want to change, and a separate cap for visitors.

Yep, you can change it at any time. Make sure you understand the difference between the "cap" and the "strict cap"
