Dwarf Fortress

Has anyone done this Stupid Dwarf Trick so far?
While on my volcano embark I had an idea, as during the construction of my main fort I encountered the issue, that I don't like the stone which is on my actual fortress layer and while I thought how to make it more like what I thought of, I came up with an idea that's so:
- impractical
- tedious
- dangerous
- useless
that I asked myself if anybody already have done this, so far I couldn't find any mention of this particular Stupid Dwarf Trick:
completely carve out several Z-layers in which you're planning to build your fortress ... flood it with magma ... flood it with water ... turn the carved out layers into obsidian layers ... carve out your actual fortress out of the newly created obsidian layer instead of using obsidian blocks.

Anybody ever tried this or read about someone who tried this? So far I couldn't find any actual mention of this on Reddit, Steam Bay12 and the Dorfen Wiki *g*

this is basically an obsidian farm.

Its called obsidian casting your fortress. I've done it a few times.

In the old legacy version you had to do this if you wanted to engrave your walls. Now you can engrave built walls its not really needed anymore.

I am going to obsidian cast a big block and plunge it through the last floor of an adamantine spire. I was lucky and my spire was not hollow to the last layer. Now I have this huge floor area separating me from the circus. And I want to enter it with a big bang!

That another good reason for obsidian casting. When you drop naturally formed blocks down they don't deconstruct like built blocks. :)

Yes, and interestingly the circus does not spawn the clowns in usual numbers when you channel through a floor. This could be my first fortress ever, to actually have a stairway down to hunt some..

Yes but he can, and its cool AF.

I will never again use block walls for every room. I'll just carve the stone after whats happened to my stock menu load. Or when I feel ballsy enough to move beyond basic magma channels I might do this.

Anyway, it's a very dwarfy thing to achieve, maybe I should add it to my list and convert my walls to cast absidian. That would definetly keep another generation of dwarves occupied.

The Obsidian Farm is pretty much the thing that made me think aboutobsidian casting my whole fortress ;)

Manually build walls still can't be engraved afaik, only build floor can, or the one time I tried if it's made possible in the meantime my game bugged out and didn't let me, possible too ^^

That's a pretty dwarfy idea. The closest I've seen was replacing the entire surface of the map with green glass floor.

You can get more ideas here:

Wait, y'all are letting your Urists live long-term in some sub-standard rock chambers?

All-obsidian living quarters, at the very least, as soon as possible. That's my early fortress goals.

Bunch of elf lovers.

Actually I always did all obsidian but with blocks, not fully cast several Z Layers of Obsidian to mine my fortress into it :)

But if you already did it, got some pictures left from this? I'd be really curious how it looks when it's done and finished to think about some nice design ideas before I start it :)

Eh, if I'm bringing up magma for the forges and/or moat (which, honestly, is just a matter of enough pumps and power generators), might as well use it for habitation environment.

Will try to get some screenies for you over the weekend.

I like the look, but it's very minimalistic, especially with all-obsidian furniture. Really don't like how the beds clash with it in the bedrooms, though.

Cool, thanks, I was thinking about making all furniture from Green Glass, looks quite nice with Obsidian Block Walls so I thought, might work just as well with fully cast Obsidian Layers

tbh not a big a fan of Obsidian in the steam version, with the floor being pure black, and looking to much like undiscovered tiles - used to be a bit more like a darker Jet.

lava tubes that extended up into the caves were easiest to farm Obsidian, or cast structures going down the tube.
