So, it USED to be that Vampires had red glowing eyes. That's actually gone now, or if it's still there they shortened the time it's visible after draining a dorf.
So, first I will explain what to do, then I will explain what to do.
You WANT a vampire, or vampires in your fortress. There are MANY reasons why. You wall them up with a Royal Bedroom, an Office, and another room with bookcases, a lever, desks, chairs, coffers. Make that room on the same level as your Library and make the Vampire, if it's a citizen, one of your Scholars. Have them setup to use the lever and set it to pull forever. Then make it your Bookkeeper with the office. The Royal bedroom mood offsets the "haven't fed" mood. Scrolls and Books "magically" get transported to/from the Vampire's portion of The greater library. Blammo, legendary Bookkeeper/Scholar.
How to find them is.. painful. It really is. Pause the game and go through EACH of the citizens. The only real guarantee is that it won't be one of your initial 7 embarkees. You want to look at their family, their thoughts, their inventory list, their previous associations, their skills, religions, unmet needs.. everything. Generally, the being that cursed them is also their religion and may have an unmet need to pray to that being. Anything that seems out of place is a marker for a vampire. Younger vampires are harder to find than older ones. They have a tendency to be banished from multiple other civilizations, have lots of children, have lots of high skills. Sometimes, rarely, they will wear items from dead people, hair/teeth/skin etc. They don't sleep, so if you are doing the standard set the bedroom, wait for dorfs to sleep and autoassign thing, then they won't have a bedroom assigned to them. Once you have a few nominees, burrow them into rooms and forbid the doors and check on them every now and then. If they sleep, not a vampire.

What the poster is doing, which is standard Vampire protocol, is checking through EACH migrant as they come in.
