Way to force empty barrels out of a food stockpile?
Planning for my project, there is more than one eating area. With a one tavern setup, the food barrels sit in the same stockpile as the now empty ones after they are used.

If my food creation is elsewhere, is there a way to automatically have dwarfs relocate empty barrels to a barrel stockpile?

I currently have a furniture stockpile with barrels, but only nee barrels get taken there. Old food and drink barrels just sit in the food drink stockpiles until someone puts food in them.

My want out of this is to create an efficient way of making food and drink elsewhere and go straight into a barrel without having either the kitchen worker run all the way down, or wait for the mercy of a labor dwarf to move it before it rots.

You can place a garbage pile next to the stockpile and designate them for dumping with the mass dumping tool (garbage can button under tools), then delete the garbage pile and use the mass allow tool (open lock button under tools). If the dwarfs reclaim them, they should either end up in the furniture (?) pile or just used directly for production of new booze.
Btw. I don't think that there is a stack limit for gargabe piles, so you can make them just a single tile.
Also works great for piling all those rocks and ores next to your workshop without needed gargantuan stockpiles.

Did you allow their material and quality in the new stockpile?

Urists will eventually shift empty barrels to barrel stockpile, but it looks to be a low-priority task.

I've seen it happen when half the population was idling, but not so much during normal "more things to do than hands to do it with" operation.

Set the food/drink stockpile to feed the furniture/barrel stockpile, then make the furniture/barrel stockpile rather large. Stockpiles appear to trigger movement of items the lower the overall % of full it is. Empty or really low % stockpiles, fast movement of items.
