...and Kenshi, and ACS, and, and...
And all of those games eventually led me to this game.
When soft drugs aren't enough, we switch to hard drugs, right?
DF seems at the same time more frustrating to handle, immensely deeper, a bit more buggy and ugly, we're not going to lie to each other, huh, but... in the end, when everything else will leave you hungry, and you want to dig deeper (literally) into these kinds of games, you will come here, sooner or later.
Such is the way.
'Martian Miner' is coming. Or Doug the Digger. Or Mother Loder, or all three. Until then, DF stands alone. Like they used to say about the Grateful Dead. 'They are not the best at what they do, but they are the only ones who do what they do.'
I'd love more games in this genre, as long as they do something different or better. It won't hurt this game so the more the merrier, I reckon
I didn't mention it, although I play it from time to time. But, the project is still very very raw.
In comparison, DF is a very, very well-polished jewel
There's not many games like this at this game's scale and certainly not with its breadth or depth. And, none with its particular flavor of evolved play. So... "no." :)
This game has a "real" engine and graphics. The UI is borked, but at least it has one now... We can hope for UI improvements and a lot of bugsquashing to come.
What gameplay do you really like? What do you feel is mandatory for an alternate title suggestion?
Note: Stonehearth with the community patch/fix/whatsits is a game that incorporates a lot of applicable game mechanics. Keep in mind any suggestion really has to include some in-depth pawn/dorf/whatsits rpg and morale systems as well as interaction mechanics, which is a big problem that limits recommendations to "DF-Like" games. There's still depth/breadth/scale problem, too. For instance, Space Colony has character/unit social interactions and mood/morale, but it's an ancient game. (Respected, but old, like me. :)) Rimworld is a good game, but it's really "its own thing." That applies to ONI, too. I saw Songs of Syx represented and it's a good choice for a larger-scale, "epic," colony builder with some 4x elements, but individual units aren't going to have a lot of focus. (It's a good game, one-man project, but amazing in what it can simulate at its scale.) There are some new colony builders in EA atm, but the "good ones" are more like "Banished" successors than DF games.
It has no meaningful character-to-character interactions and no morale/mood mechanics. Characters only have the bare minimum in terms of independent behavior sets. (Operate/store thing, combat, rescue, eat...)
It's a great party-based real-time combat RPG game, though. Base-building is sort of "tacked on" but it does have it's own light focus in terms of mechanics.

If that's what you're looking for, check out Catacylsm: Dark Days Ahead[cataclysmdda.org]. Open-source community project, so freeware. Major fun in the same roguelike way.
DF has its megaprojects, CDDA has its mobile murderhome construction.
"Cruising in my landcrusher through zombie hordes, looking for [redacted] to burn" is pretty much how I'd summarize my usual end game (not that there aren't many other things to do, it's just how I usually end up).
Getting to that point, though, is hella fun.
CDDA would certainly be in my playlist, but I just can't stand "zombie games." I just... don't? Why's it always gotta be zombies? :/
Unreal World seems like more of a fit with DF's play. (Though, both CDDA and CoQud (Edit: Steam doesn't like that abbreviation...) are top-notch games.)

There's a free version, but since this is the "PC Game that has the longest continuous development period in World History," I think the dev deserves a couple of bucks.
I can say with confidence that everything in this bundle is worth playing/owning:

You're missing out big time.
