War grizzly bears
I have trained 10 grizzlies to be war grizzlies, I've assigned 1 to each member of a squad as pet, to see if they'd follow i sent out the squad on a patrol, no bears, so i can't figure out how to have them follow the soldiers. do i have to kick the bears out of their pen?

Yes, keeping animals in pens does tend to limit their movement to the pen.

My war dogs aren't penned, there are no active burrows, and they never accompany their masters when I send my squads out to repel invaders. War animals seem to be broken currently.

War animals do sometimes have a tendency to follow their trainer. Can be difficult sometimes to get them to be assigned toi the right person. In the old version, once they had been assigned to a dwarf they couldn't be reassigned. Not sure what new bugs have been introduced now...

Hmm, I think it worked for me... maybe doesn't always. Did you station your squad beforehand and wait for them to all group up?

Yes. Soldiers go to their station, their war dogs don't.

I've been sending them on missions with their owners. It's fun to see goblins getting torn up by bears in the logs.

Not sure what's up with yours, if they're not in a pasture.

War animals do follow their masters to raids and such, I can confirm this as someone that sends many war-hounds to the grinder (they have awful survival rates).

The animals must not be caged or pastured however, and must have a clear path to their owner/ the edge of the map (so no locking them in an area).

Said animals must also be assigned as work animals and given to soldiers (I assume you meant this when you said you made them pets).

Okay, I guess I figured it out. My war dogs are all dead! BUT they are all still listed as the assigned pet on the Overview tab for each of my military dorfs (so I thought the dogs were still in the fort somewhere - there's their name listed right there!) So it's a UI bug, but the war dogs themselves functioned properly (they just all got killed in battle.)

think bigger! Giant War Grizzly Bears.. size matters! :P

(tbh this is only reason I dont kill Elves on sight - pets they can bring)

I have a Giant War Tiger roaming the fort. Just waiting on traders to randomly bring a mate.

Sod the elves, this is what I embark in tropical savanna Untamed Wilds for (except for the $^@!&^@ GIANT KEAS!!1one!!)

And if you have a decent river in the embark, that also means giant hippos. I actually scored those in my current Terrifying reanimating biome - thankfully, saw only one group early on before any threats were around, haven't respawned yet.

Designed my waterworks with the thought of undead giant hippos potentially strolling in from the start, though.
