Hospital filling up with buckets of muddy water.
How do I stop this. I have a work order to make new buckets when there are not enough empty ones and they just keep building more and bringing them to the hospital.

Odd, not seen that one, usually it's lye workorders that devour my buckets....does your hospital have it's reserved buckets available?

Yes, I have 3 requested, it says there are 3 in the hospital but there are like 50 buckets full of muddy water in and around the beds.

the best way to avoid muddy water is to dry your wells and dig a hole, so its source of water is at least 1z level below your reservoir. Your dwarfs will take water from the top layer, while any mud is on the bottom.

Once all yout muddy water is used, your fortress wil only have acess to pure water, solving your problem.

DFHack has a function to empty buckets like that. You need a deeper cistern too to stop it from being muddy.

Your cistern needs to be deeper or filled again and/or you need a filtered water source or constantly flowing one instead of a "pool" that you've designated.

If you can find a safe, clean, water, fresh-water source other than the one you have, designate that one instead and fix what you're currently using.

You can "filter" water through pumps or diagonally dug tiles on the same level, IIRC.

ie: Check for "Muddy Water" in the wiki for the cause and solutions.

Is the problem that the water in the buckets is muddy, or that they keep filling buckets with water and bring them to the hospital?

I wasn't looking for a solution to prevent muddy water, but it is appreciated non the less. Is it the muddy water that causes these bucket to keep being left in the hospital? If I fix the water source, how do I get rid of all the muddy water buckets?

You designate a pit/pond zone and let the dwarves dump water in it, and forbid the buckets after they do so.

I am guessing that the hospital wants clean water, and when someone brings a bucket of muddy water the demand is still there, triggering another bucket.

No, the hospital will demand a bucket of any water, and the dwarves will drink it along with mud.

You need to get on that before they use 50 buckets though, because then you need to micromanage all of them being dumped into a pond.

the same thing happens with buckets of clean water, the only real fix is to manually empty the buckets either by using dfhack or putting a pedestal somewhere and setting all the water in buckets to be "displayed"

Are you saying, here, that "buckets of clean water" will turn into "buckets of muddy water" over time? (I'm just trying to make sure I understand what you're saying, not implying or disagreeing with any particular interpretation. :))

No? Buckets of clean water appear when someone is carrying one for a job and the job is cancelled. The bucket gets dropped and is now stuck being full.

No, the dwarves frequently carry water buckets to "give water" to thirsty soldiers or other citizens, resulting in a bunch of half-empty buckets everywhere.
