I have set my stockpile to receive horns and hooves. Despite that, the results still went straight into the trash pile.
There are no standing orders for horns and hooves. Skulls, bones, skins, shells, hair and wool are the only options.
Did you remove the setting for horns and hooves from the trash pile?
If yes, try setting up your horn/hooves-stockpile to take from the trash pile
4x4 embark is a step-up from the classic's 3x3 default, and even that was already causing some issues with workflow due to distance. I noticed my miners occasionally take a dirt nap when doing work on outer edges of the embark, even when the stairs to the bedrooms are smack down in the middle of the map.
Edit: Ninja'd by Cheet4h - having refuse pile also accepting the same could override stockpile settings, I suppose, if the game looks for "best match" in terms of item type and "trash" tag.
The trash pile is the game’s dumo zone. I don't think that has any settings
Is it? Last I checked that's called "garbage dump", and horns/hooves etc. shouldn't be put there automatically unless you set up the standing order to "dump <x>" - although I haven't ever used that, so I don't know if it's actually marked as "dump item".
To be fair, the stockpile containing horns/hooves is called "refuse stockpile", so it's also not clear if OP meant that. Since they wrote "trash pile" I assumed they set up a stockpile for refuse somewhere.
If your dwarves are moving horns and hooves into a garbage dump zone, it's because you marked the items for dumping. If you have a refuse stockpile that accepts horn/hoof items, the dwarves will automatically move such items there (assuming you set it up correctly).
Sigh if you really want to be particular about nomenclature, take it up against all the video tutorials who didn't have a consistent name. I've heard ‘trash pile’, ‘garbage dump’, trash zone, garbage zone, corpse pile, and all other permutations used interchangeably. It confused me when I started the game, and also left me with mistaken names.
To clarify:
I have a stockpile to accept hooves, skulls, bones, wool, shells, and horns.
The stockpile only accepted bones, wool, skulls, and shells despite being set to accept horns and hooves.
My standing order is "dump all other objects". Every other standing orders on that page is "save"

I happen to be getting rid of my horn/hoof items by turning them into crafts right now, and here is my refuse stockpile for them:

And my standing orders:

Horns and hooves aren't included in the "save <x>" lists, so they're likely lumped into the "other objects" category.
I'd suggest creating a stockpile set to accept the refuse categories "item types", "body parts" and "teeth" where you want your refuse put, and set the standing order to "save other objects".
Although if you want to use hooves etc. for crafting, you should probably store teeth there, too, since it can also be used as a crafting material.
