second, there are 3 submenu's in the workshop interface. 'task' is where you can order one item to be crafted manually, order something here and someone should come and build it regardless if you have a manager or not. downside is you have to order items one by one. 'workers' is where you can restrict the workshop to be used by only one specific dwarf, for now make sure no-one is selected there. 'work orders' is where you order items in larger quantities. you need a manager to be able to use the last feature. if you appointed a manager already make sure he has an office and not much else to do, he actually needs to manage orders from his office or they will not be moved from 'work orders' to 'tasks'. in the task bar at the bottom of the screen there is a work orders menu as well, it show all orders (this doesn't mean they are actually active tasks). you can cue orders here as well with the icon in the upper right corner. it works the same but your order will be spread between multiple workshops if you have more than one
and third, if a red circle like icon pops up on the left of the screen it means a job has been cancelled. hover over it to see which one and why maybe your materials are inaccessible or something
i said that i opened all jobs to everyone as well as restricting jobs. open jobs don't need to be assigned and storage lots don't need to be linked with workshops so idk how your 'advice' is helpful at all. however, the problem was that the manager was not doing his job of allowing work orders for some reason
