Do dwarves claim bedrooms on their own or not?
So I was under the assumption dwarves would claim bedrooms as they became ready (which they initially seemed to) but now I've got about 150 dwarves with some 200 bedrooms yet I'm finding dozens and dozens of them don't claim rooms and sleep on the floor causing themselves to get upset.

Am I missing something? I know I can manually assign rooms but not to sound lazy but it takes fricking ages to scroll through the list of 100s of dwarves and assign one by one.

When I rebuild *all* my bedrooms about 3/4 of my dwarves reclaimed one themselves. Some didnt and slept in stupid places such as the edge of a magma dump pit. There were enough bedrooms free to give every dwarf at least 2 rooms.
I have no idea why some didn't claim.

thats kind of the same issue I'm having yeah, to begin dwarves up to around the number 90/100 would take the spare rooms but now I've got upwards of 60+ dwarves angry because they are sleeping on floors when there is easily 100 rooms ready and waiting, good rooms too with engraved walls and cabinets/coffers.

I am finding that any dwarves, or humans, etc that join the fort via petition don't auto claim a bedroom when they are tired.

That might be part of my issue too but for me its largely migrants, they arrive, start working, then just sleep on floors despite so many spare rooms.

You should also have a dormitory with about 10 beds for Dwarfs that haven't claimed a room yet.

Years ago I would always assign bedrooms, but it's largely unnecessary unless you want to deal with specific dwarfs.

Did you setup a huge room complex? I never had this issue with migrants (only petitions) but i have scattered Dormitorys (10-20 beds) and my Rooms are also scattered all over the Fortress in 10-20 Units. My guess is the dwarves have to far to walk to a bedroom so they just prefer the floor.
Need to add i watched dwarves with a own room use one of my dormitorys because it was not as far as their own room.

I have bedrooms toward the "middle" of my fort with stairs that go to upper/lower levels, each level has about 50 or so beds so that they never have to travel too far from the main staircase, maybe that's the issue, I'm not sure..

Maybe just place a few rooms near the dwarves and look if they claim them? Should be the fastest way to test my thesis

Tried it, they don't seem to :( I'll give it more time, maybe it takes a few ingame months or something.

One thing that would cause dwarves to sleep on the floor & not claim a room in previous versions was having the hunting labor turned on. Is there any chance that is the case with the ones you are having problems with? Either hunting assigned directly, or the labor group set to "everyone"?

Vampires, weredwarves and maybe necromancers also don't claim rooms, but that is because they don't sleep, so they shouldn't be getting bad thoughts about sleeping in the dirt ... and except for a were-infestations or a necromancer book in your library, it shouldn't affect that many dwarves.

I think they sleep once a month or less, so waiting a bit isn't the worst idea.

Are they overworked and just can't get to a bedroom before they're exhausted and choose to sleep on the floor?

Long-term residents might do this at times because "Tavern/Inn" bedrooms aren't working right, atm, and they can't/won't rent them. Regular citizens will use them, though.

Hunters will sleep anywhere, according to something I read somewhere that, IIRC, appears to be true. (ie: I don't know for sure :))

I've split my accommodations up among several apartment blocks on different levels and those appear to be used frequently/without issue. I haven't spotted any floor-sleepers and am closing in on 1:1 housing with 229+ residents. (I could have surpassed it, but haven't done a recount after the last block I placed.)

PS: I also retain a decently sized dormitory.

That would be a good thing to report as a bug.

That depends on the specifics.

If it's a petition to join as a Citizen, then it would be a bug if they can't/won't claim an open Bedroom. (I could see that as plausible, as well.)

If they just want to reside there as a Resident, then they can only claim Tavern/Inn Rooms and that mechanic appears to be buggy at the moment. (Known and reported on the bugtracker, confirmed AFAIK)
