Dwarf Fortress

Only metal bins in a stockpile? Only wooden?
Hey, so, I'm trying to set up 'elf safe' trading stockpiles, but my dwarves aren't using the metal bins I've made yet despite forbidding all organic material from the stockpiles. Have they simply not started using the new bins, or do they just never bother?

In my experience they just use whatever is closest. Trade away all your other bins to someone else and eventually they'll have to use the elf safe ones. Also, maybe someone more knowledgeable can say for sure, but I'm not sure you can restrict what bins go in a stockpile if those bins are going to be used for storage. For instance, I can restrict all barrels of all kinds from my food pile, and that will keep the empty ones out, but once there's wine in it that barrel is going straight to the food pile.

Eugh, that's a hell of an oversight considering the game will track individual *socks*.
All these people trading with elves is disgusting. Damned elf sympathizers.

There are lots of oversights in a game that tracks individual socks and splatters.

Hey, I have enough hassle from Forgotten Beasts, Gremlins, Crawling Eyes and crundles, I don't need to go to war with the local Elves, too. And my magma is like 150 levels under the surface, I can't just melt 'em like that.

Man, I'm gonna have to replace all my bins somehow...only way I know how to do *that* is to mark everything as trash, let it all get emptied, then reclaim it all. Booo.

You can haul goods to the depot in wood bins as long as you don't sell the actual bins to the elves they won't get mad. Just sell the individual items in the bins in the trade screen.

While tedious, you can sell item 1 by 1 instead of the whole bin. Elves being hypocrites are OK with you bringing wooden bins full of bones and stuff, then pick the random rock craft in it to sell it to them. They are not OK if you sell the bin.

I haven't found a way to bring only specific type of material bin/pot/wheelbarrow to a stockpile. It's an issue for some reasons, like yesterday I lost a masterwork wheelbarrow to a fire snake that was wandering about in my obsidian casting stockpile. It's a vermin, and I can't do much besides sending an army of cats and hope they take care of those before they burn more stuff.

That tediousness is more annoying than the tediousness of unloading all of the bins and restocking with metal ones. It's especially bad when some of the bins have 200 some items in them, of low individual value. I'm using rock figurines to deal with the tens of thousands of pounds of rock I'm mining up. And bone figures and skull totems to deal with *that*. I'm just happy I finally found magma to dump stuff into. God I hate elves though. as if the no wood wasn't bad enough, now no animal products? Yeesh.

You can do a quantum stockpile (use wiki fi you don't know how) and set everything to "no bins" (both the giving and receiving stockpile). Make sure you don't have bins anywhere in the stockpile chain (it messes up things). That way you can directly bring the items to the trade, and while the dwarf will do it one by one, they'llbe organized in the trade menu and you can sell "all" the same item from the category. Say "gabbro earrings" (you have a box next to the menu).
I used to do that in classic a few years back, with bins being buggy things as they were.

I haven't been able to figure out how to get minecarts working yet, so I just have a single space Trash zone central to the base. It takes just as long to get everything there, and unloaded. And this way it also lets me make sure everything is in the right stockpiles. It won't always re-sort things out of stockpiles if it's been forbidden after it's already there.

Quantum stockpile don't require you to understand minecarts. You make 1 stop (construction) that say it dumps (the arrow) in the direction of where you want the quantum stockpile (can also be used to "dump" stuff in a hole, for various purposes). Make a minecart "route" that only have said stop, remove all conditions, accept what you want in the minecart menu and done. Don't forget to assign a minecart.

Essentially, the minecart will never move from the stop, and will dump on the direction assigned whatever you put in it. Obviously you can set up a real route and whatnot, but that's more complex and not needed in the slightest.
Refer to the wiki article for specific stockpile command to make sure it works, but that's the minecart related thing.

If you do'nt want to do minecart, you can always make a giant stockpile which act the same. Quantum stockpile save space, which will be needed if you trade lots of "trash" like crafts.

Nothing wrong with presenting some lovely woodcrafts to an elf trader.

I suggest presenting a fine bridge made out of wood. Present it by smashing it on their face. They always seems to appreciate that. I never heard any complain afterward, anyway.

Furniture Stockpile -> Type Bin -> Material the Metal you Want.
When you Place this Stockpile beside the Place were you collect the Elf sellable stuff they should start using the Metal Bins only for this Stuff because its by far the nearest option to get a bin.

You're depriving him of the opportunity to make even more lovelier elf-bone crafts and bolts...
