Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress

How can I make storage for all of my random rocks all over my fortress?
My fortress is littered with stone circles everywhere and my sotckpiles have grown FULL from all of them forcing ll new items created to be stuck inside their respective workshops. Is there a storage container I can create to make more room in my stockpiles, like the wooden crates I saw during embark?

quantum stockpile https://dwarffortresswiki.org/index.php/Quantum_stockpile let you store an unlimited amount of items on a single tile

Another thing you can do is simply use the eyeball button on the top right menu and drag that over the rocks and such. It won't move them, and your dwarves will still make use of them, but you (the player) can't see them any longer. That's what I do! Just take care that you don't hide anything you do want to keep track of. :)

You can turn stones in rock blocks, which are easier for dwarfs to carry and fit in bins. You can't use them for crafting, but you can use them for building walls and floors and stuff, where they will probably save a lot of hauling time and make your architecture a little more valuable.

The feature for removing specific rocks from specific places is garbage dumping, which is what's used for quantum stockpiles. Unfortunately it seems to have the lowest hauling priority now, so make sure to reduce all other hauling tasks as much as possible by limiting bin use or stockpile sizes.

Most of the time you should be able to just hide them, and most of the time they will get moved when you build a door or something that they're in the way of.

Rock blocks are actually a good idea to make because they weigh much less, create smooth rather than rough walls/floors, and the lower weight speeds up construction.

I wouldn't create massive stone stockpiles as it will create too many hauling jobs when lots of stone are used up making things from them.

Single tile dump pit or chute spanning multiple z levels, near to where you want the stone (eg block producing workshops). Create a dumping zone over the hole and a tile next to it, where they will stand and throw or drop the object. Then mass dump all the rocks to have them moved to that location. If multiple z-levels, you need to micro access to the lowest tile if you do this (make sure no dwarves have reason to be there).

Once it's cleaned up go in and add a stone stockpile on that single tile, and then use the mass-allow designation (open padlock) on the tile.

Note that this is only viable if you have a good size population with peasant hauler team (or lots of children). Otherwise trying to do this can kill your fortress with unnecessary dump jobs (the same as stone smoothing).

The other way to dump stuff into a single tile is minecarts with an "auto dump" minecart stop. Basically set up a stockpile about the size of the minecart capacity, set it as narrowly as possible for the type of items you want, build a minecart track from the stockpile to the auantum dump, then set the minecart to load everything from the stockpile and autodump when it gets to the end.
