I tried that, but there was no button to assign anything. The chain didn't have anything that allows me to assign anything either.

Also, I couldn't build the cage with a troll in it, so I couldn't connect a lever to the cage, and it ended up just sitting in my stockpile. In the end I threw the whole thing out on the surface garbage spot.
I tried reading all the wiki and the guides and the instructions didn't match. So I'm left very confused.
Regarding building a troll cage, from memory, which might not be totally accurate, you go to the build menu, cages and restraints, select cage, choose where to build it, and then scroll through the list til you find the cage you want.
Unfortunately it showed me only empty cages.
When I read a bit more, I think I found my problem:
"A way to release creatures from stockpiled cages (which have not been built) is to assign the creatures to a pasture (which is possible for any living thing except dwarves). The same precautions as for trading the cage should be taken first."
Looks like I have to literally lay the troll out for pasture with an army surrounding him
Chain can be used in a room for a dungeon (a jail). I personally do fancy jail with fancy chain and a bed so my prisoner are not too miserable. Just remember, creature have a move range of 3*3 centered around the chain when chained.
