At this point I'm surprised they don't first check to make sure the metal was smelted in a magma forge first before buying it. Like they routinely eat sentient beings, but we can't eat plants and animals because blah blah blah.
But... why?
Whether they impacts the ash used in some non-green glass being acceptable to them, I don't know.
Lorewise, in the game's code tags, they're carnivores. If they kill another sapient being in combat, they can eat it. I don't think anything actually enforces it, though. It does show up in worldgen history when an elf kills someone in combat and feasts!
I would imagine they can also eat fruit and other things which fall from trees, considering they always live in areas with them. That's not harming the tree, after all!
Not really, but in legends they do eat defeated foes, including intelligent beings.
It'd be a fine question to answer someday, then. It's definitely in the code that they will eat the corpses of sapients they've defeated in combat, and it happens during worldgen. But, elves are immortal in DF, so they can't really go on killing and devouring people for all eternity and still have a society. :)
I'd imagine there's some loophole somewhere. Or, they just have their own sekrit food. :) Elves in classic adventurer mode aren't bound by this and can nab edibles from barns and storage spots to eat, nobody seems to mind them taking those.
In Steam version, they refuse the same + anything made from animal (leather, meat). But also wool (for some reason ?), but not silk (don't ask).
Also, note that if someone decorate an item with wood or leather it will be a nono for elves to.
