pickup equipment loops
How do you break this?

My miners are stuck in a loop, pickupaxe, go to a room, get clothes, drop off clothes elsewhere, drop off pickaxe, repeat, forever and ever.

He isn't even upgrading clothes, its all the same clothes. I don't know what the problem is.

----
Edit: The only advise anyone seems to have is to take them out of the military completely. Regardless if they are running no orders, or training, and regardless of uniform settings. Evidently, it is an ancient bug that is never going to be fixed.

The problem with that in this version is that there are no civ alerts. You have no way to get dwarves inside when danger or an invasion comes. Burrows DO NOT apply to idle dwarves or children. If you do not seal off the outside world and the caverns 100% of the time, your dwarves can wander out and be caught. The player is left with ZERO options to get them to safety.

The only work around for this lack of civ alert, was to assign everyone to a squad and use the training setting when danger comes, to get them to immediately go to a barracks out of the way.

If you unassign you woodcutters and miners from squads, you cannot do this, and they inevitably die wandering around like jackasses when an invasion comes and throughout the invasion.

----
Edit

Walls, bridges, other military have nothing to do with it. Unless you seal up your fort 100% of the time, dwarves wander.

I have defenses, it doesn't matter when a dwarf is out humping a tree on the border of the map and will not go underground when danger comes.

Yeah I got a similar, cept it's one of my dorfs that gets stuck not drinking....then I have to forbid and unforbid all the booze and food in the fort.

Are your miners in the military by any chance?
There is an old bug that equipment required for civilian jobs (mining, woodcutting or hunting) conflicts with military uniform and the dwarves can't equip both at the same time. They will drop whole uniform to pick up pickaxe or wood axe for civilian jobs, and they drop pickaxe when required to stay in uniform.

I'm also having this problem, although the dwarfs that mine/hunt/cut wood are fine; there's just a few that are naked and miserable because they spend all their time picking things up and dropping them again.

All my Squads are set to off duty, no orders and yet they still run around grabbing squad uniforms and stripping naked to pick up various civilian clothes, which they also strip off to pick up weapons and such.

The rest of the squad is fine, it's just two that I've found that are... confused

Don't assign Miners, Hunters, or... dangit, whats the other uniform role? Anyway, don't assign them to any squads at the same time they're in that other role.

When creating a squad, assign them some kind of Uniform - Picking no uniform seems to tell them exactly that, so they'll dump weapons, etc... Give them a Uniform at full "choice" if necessary. Test, rinse, repeat. (Update Uniform only forces them to recheck inventory and what they're wearing. That can still be stymied, too, by other dorfs claiming items to wear.)

Uniforms are buggy... Assigning them a uniform that has already been created before the squad is filled seems like the best option.

PS: One should not choose "wear over civilian clothes" if one wishes them to wear protective footwear.

We break this by not assigning miners to military squads.

I never put miners, woodcutters, or hunters in the military. Just too much potential for weirdness like this.

If we take dwarves out of the military, we are back to random dwarfs dying because there are no civ alerts. The only work around was to put them in the military so you could have them retreat to barracks.

I'm using burrows like I used to with civ alerts, and it's working mostly fine. YMMV ofc but the thing with miners' uniform conflicting with military one has been a thing for a long time and them getting stuck in loops and not being able to mine seems worse to me than losing an occasional dorf in a siege (they seem to find ways to die anyway sometimes lol)

They don't work for keeping your dwarves out of danger, it's been tested, posted, and verified. They only hint where a dwarf should go, and only if he is full grown, and only if he never wants to go idle.

So, I guess we are stuck until they implement civ alerts again, unless we want dead miners and woodcutters.

Reread the comment above you. After that read it again. Then one more time.

You are literally arguing

"It hurts to live"
"then don't live"

Either you are stuck in an equipment loop, or your dwarves die idling during a seige. One or the other. you can't have both. If you have a specific fix that addresses both at once, then suggest it, but let's not argue in circles for 60 posts.

Don’t let your dwarves idle outside then. It’s really not that difficult. You really shouldn’t have many dwarves outside of the fort most of the time. A woodcutter or two perhaps, if you happen to be low on wood at the time.

My dwarves don't die during a siege, lmao. And they are neither stuck in any equipment loop.

They are stuck carrying goblinite to the smelters, though. I guess that's technically an equipment loop.
