Caged prisoners keep escaping when I try to throw them into the pit
I have made a lava pit to throw undead, random goblins, and assorted other creatures. It works for trogs and trolls, but whenever I try to throw prisoners they escape the moment I take them out of the cage. I don't understand why it's failing. I have a ton of cage traps for my seiges so the cleanup can get really messy.

It happens occasionally, you can mitigate it a lot by putting the cage stockpile directly next to the hatch and the pit zone only covers the 1 tile cage stockpile and the adjacent hatch.

FWIW mine appear to mostly screw up when they "throw" from south to north and east to west....my room enters from west

Are they wild trolls from the caverns? Wild animals behave differently from invaders, who'll go bananas trying to escape.

I think if the cages are placed directly adjacent to your pit, the dwarves can release the prisoner and shove them off before getting spooked

Oh no, my pit is facing north. I tried throwing undead in it and only 1 out of....everything was succesfully thrown down. The rest escaped and caused much trauma (nobody died though)

Yeah the wild trolls and trogs are the ones that went smoothly. I have the stockpile positioned near the pit. I didn't dare put it too close just in case a dwarf accidentally dodges into it.

You can throw a forbidden hatch over the hole and they'll still chuck through it

Ah, I forgot to clarify. They're not climbing out. Instead, they break free and fight the moment I take them out of the cage.

This happens to me too since I built a pit arena for them with some rock grate door system things.
By far, I find out that the citizen's bravery would cause a huge issue about this, like if they patrolling two prisoners too close and one of them start fleeing, the prisoner will immediately escaped and start to attack.
Same as they fleeing from the monsters in the pit if tha pit wasn't 3 to 4 more tile high.
Such as goblin soldier, You can only keep them for one to two on the map, once they are more than 2 out of cages, the third one will start to attack once it got out.
Until now I still testing all the issue about pit prisoners.
Sometimes I find out my dwarves would jump 5 tiles high to just kill that goblin in that tiny pit hole.
but most importantly, they can't climb a smooth walls, so far none of them escape from pit by that.

edit: throw them into lava might be a waste, cause I would smelt their item for coin even if it's copper.

Oh I never throw them away with their gear and clothes. Always 100% strip before dunking.

I keep my cages in a well. I fill it after stripping prisoners, drain it after they drown, fill it after emptying the cages, and flush them down to the caves.
It's my dwarven garbage disposal.

What if they're zombies though?

You can kill the zombies by dumping stones down.
As a !fun! gamer, I basically always settle in the worst area. You can even find some question I asked in forum.
So I have several underworld base design basically about dealing with corpses without lava as soon as possible.
I basically find out you can kill them with object by this point, but that hole was 8 to 9 tile high.
I even use this for execution before until I build a arena with evil mist for them.
