Dwarf Fortress

How do I plug up accidentally mining into a river?
I'm bad at DF, so question: how can you stop an unplanned flood, or is it hopeless?

I accidentally mined into a river, and flooded my entire fort, in fact I didn't even realise what was happening for a few minutes because I was distracted by a hamster in the open world and was just chilling to the cool music.

I had played a bit of the original, so I was planning on having some water management, so I had the foresight to build some floodgates, and I managed to put one floodgate down in water (where it was shallow), but it was mostly too late. No-one actually died but I decided the tutorial was over and abandoned the fort.

Related question: I seemed to be able to plop a floodgate down in level 1 water, what's the limit?

just place alot doors in your fort they also stop water , you can repair the breach in winter you can dig out the frozen water other way to manage water can be pumping magma on it but that needs alot preparing to build the pumpstack.

if your biome is cold in winter and freezes, that's easiest time to fix a problem breech.

getting water level down to block, or get items/corpses/logs back is a either redirecting river, or pumping water somewhere else.
