Dwarf Fortress

SPOILERS : anyone else annoyed by the items found in the circus ?
I've found one of the spires or towers that lead to the underworld and digging down level by level, I've found many divine artifacts and at first I was incredibly happy as this was unobtainable in previous versions without adventure mode at least.

Then I started noticing a pattern, all of the armor pieces I've found are large and completely wasted on my dwarfs.
Is it just bad luck on my part ? And if not am I the only one extremely disappointed by this ?

nope they're artifacts :(
Some of the clowns have non artifacts ones that can be melted but it's very very very rare
To give you an idea I've collected 17 artifacts including 2 shields and 1 crossbow that I can use while in the same time a single clown dropped pale metal equipment that I melted and amounted to a single bar of metal.
I didn't keep track but I probably dealt with 15 clowns or so, only 1 dropped equipment

start a few maps and use DFHack to reveal map. Unpause and this will reveal all the items hidden in the caverns. Check to see if they're large.

It doesn't wok, I mean it does but only for the "dungeons" that are not in the spires going down to hell, those are only revealed if you use reveal hell and with that command there is no way to unpause so you see the rooms but not what's inside.

I revealed the map in my game and accidently unpaused. Got many messages about wonderous items found, scattered all over the caverns. Are there more items down near the adamant spires? The spires should be kept hidden by the normal reveal, to prevent the circus from stirring, but all the others should be visible.

What you guys call the spire is that hole on candy that leads to the circus?

Every single artifact I've got from the map and not crafted by my dwarfs comes from one of the 4 adamantine spires and I've not even reached the bottom of it. I've found 17 artifacts at the moment but I have 3 unexplored spires and 8 more levels to go on the one I'm currently digging, I'm exactly at half point

I tried your method and I got 3 messages about wondrous items found, the only one I could locate was a human weapon

So I would say that the vast majority of artifacts are found in the spires.

But if all but a handful are useless to me I would prefer to find more clowns with equipment I could melt and less artifacts.

Well in this new version the circus is also hidden in the spires.
Imagine 4 columns roughly 20x20 that span 10 to 20 z levels. they're rock but with a lot of pockets of water, lava and some 1x1 rooms with surprises, some clowns some artifacts.
At some point there is candy, in the one I'm exploring it started in the 6th level of 16 and I peeked with DfHack so I know the hole starts 3 levels before the bottom but in another the hole stats 6 levels before so it's till random where in the candy walls you'll find the hole. It seems to be mostly centered in the middle tough, None f the 4 I have are near the sides of the spires.

Yeah, when you reveal map it reveals all the wonderous item at the same time, so you can only zoom to the latest. Bad navigation tools there. :(

In my game I had almost a dozen items scattered around. Managed to spot a few, not just the zoom to one. There were some axes in there, so normal dwarf equipment is possible.

Wow you got lucky there ! I had only 7 "dungeons" that got revealed and of those 3 beasts, 1 fire and 3 artifacts. Is your embark bigger ?

And sure you can get a few items that can be used I got 2 shields and a crossbow and maybe a couple of human weapons that dwarfs also can equip but armor wise it's 100% large at the moment at least.
Well to be fair there are also a crown, earrings an amulet and a figurine they could use but well that's not going to help a lot in battle :)

Standard 4x4. High elevation so a lot of zed levels under me. Plus I always give myself a few extra levels on the detailed world creation. Probably was a few beasts or fire that I didn't spot among the items. It can be difficult to locate them all if you use reveal to reveal them all at once.

A comment on the size category for the Circus Props you've found,

They are based on the procedurally determined size of the High Clowns, the ones you normally only find inside Circus Vaults. They can range anywhere in size from a little bit small than megabeasts to just about the size of a Human - so a Human raiding a Circus Vault can even use some of the Circus Props they find, if they are lucky enough to get High Clowns in their size.

The same cannot be said for Dwarves however - I am fairly certain the High Clowns can never be Dwarf sized. So virtually every single Circus Prop you find is going to be in the large size category. At best, your squads might be able to use some of the weaponry two-handed?

Ah thanks it makes sense even if it's pretty disappointing.
And yes you're right some of the weapons are usable by dwarfs I got a longsword and a flail that my strongest dwarves could use but the best finds I had were 2 shields and a crossbow.
I was hopping for armor over weapons because most of my military has already named their weapons and shields, only the marksdwarves have unnamed shields still but their use is very very limited so it feels like a huge waste.

Easy way to toggle them off?

Disable them in the settings
