Name Change

If I change a name of someone in my clan, does that effect that character's history and heritage? Or will all that info stay true to the character? I'd like to change a few names to names I will relate to better but do not at all want to hurt or change the deep history.

It shouldn't impact their history or anything, they're still the same person.

It used to be the case that nicknames showed up in names in legends too, I'm not sure whether that's still the case

Name changes can cause problems if you're trying to memorialise a dwarf but mainly from finding them in the list. I give all my starting dwarfs nicknames and when some die it is hard to find their name and memorialise them, as it reverts to the original name.

In the options there is an option for nicknames. Replace first, last or centre. I go for centre now so I can still see their original names and find them in various menus, but have their nickname as a middle name.

As an aside, all the dwarven names do have meanings in the dwarven language.

I used to nicknamed historical people in Adventurer mode in Classic. It should use them when they're referenced by other people. If you nickname a human law-giver, their civ coins should have the nickname on the back.

if you abandon any fortress, nicknames given should still carry over, if those dwarfs appear at your new fort.

of course Steam version has bugs - I've had a whole squad lose their nicknames for some reason.
