Dwarf Fortress

Is there any point in making loincloths?
Theoretically shirt, trousers, shoes cover everything needed. So is there any reason to make loincloths other than luxury?

If an elf or a goblin dies in your fortress they're probably wearing underwear which one of your dwarfs will make a beeline for. They will then wear that bloodsoaked stinky pair of goblin knickers until it rots off their body, unless they can replace it with a fresh pair. Once you have underwear (or mittens / hats / coats etc) in your fortress you need to produce replacements so that the dwarfs don't go insane from wearing clothes that rot off their body

Oh no that means I have to make one of everything eventually? Even the stuff I can't make like headscarves?

If there aren't any to equip, they can't eventually get upset about having shoddy/tattered clothes in that slot.

Still, clothing is a nice mood booster once you can make good clothing. It's also one of the few perks kids actually like and a big mood penalty for them when their own clothing starts to fall apart.

Nice clothes = good idea for dorfs

PS: I make something for every slot for civilians and with the extra amulets my King keeps wanting me to make, lots of dorfs are wearing several of those at a time, too. :) I started making loincloths for my military dorfs just out of plain sympathy... Steel can be scratchy stuff.

I would keep their clothes on if they stop charging into battle with cloth shoes and get stabbed in the foot:crying_yeti:

One would think that a Dorf foot is the second least-vulnerable part of their body, after their head...

Layered armor solves for that, though you may wish to be sure you have plenty of cloth shoes. Leather shoes are also tagged as civilian wear, IIRC. In essence, all your civvies could be in leather, but it can get to be a chore and you'll have to keep buying loads of it from caravans. (I don't know if one can produce enough leather from farmed animals for full civvy-leathers.)

For alot problems Squads can help if you put that dwarf into a squad and make a uniform that replaces clothing , if he is also stuck behind doors he wil drop it on the spot.

Would this make them wear chainmail under their clothes?
