When will worn clothing management be fixed?
Apparently this has been going on for over 10 years: Dwarfs just stuffing their cabinets full of worn clothing instead of simply dumping them, causing performance degradation over time. Considering the severity, it seems kinda important to fix, no? And yes, I know there are elaborate workarounds for that: I don't care. It shouldn't require them.

Putnam told me items lying around is not a big issue for FPS. We were talking of body parts lying around (I have 1200 in my fort), but I assume it works with old clothing to.

Just in case people don't know, she is the one they hired to help the brothers. She know her stuff.

I go through my stock to sell and dispose of worn stuff like once every game year or two. Rather tedious though.

You can't do that with owned items. The dwarves put them in their room/cabinet and you can't do anything with it. It's their stuff, basically.

There's a DFHack remedy for this, for those who are able/willing to use it in its current alpha state and wouldn't consider it a "cheat."

Indeed. You can decide not to place cabinets in bedrooms, but that's also not a perfect solution since dumped clothing still has ownership for a long time. You can only sell dumped clothes when the ownership has expired. DFHack can remove ownership, but that shouldn't be needed.
The ownership timer should be decreased. And clothes shouldn't wear down this fast. I have dwarves who never craft or go outside wearing down a leather cloak in a few months. This is pretty ridiculous realism wise.
"Oh look", said the scribe. "My hydra leather cloak is full of holes again"

If items in cabinets have their temperature calculations batched together then it shouldn't have a noticeable FPS impact, that'd be a handy optimization if it's not already in place

Locking an item in cabinet removes the claim after some time you can line up your rooms /cabinets in a line and lock dump everything with 2 clicks after that you can unlock all cabinets in stocks window.

Yes, but I honestly never noticed any FPS impact from dumping all the used clothes, so I'm inclined to say it's not really important.

Likewise, but many people continuously insist otherwise, or are merely doing so as an excuse to satisfy their own OCD over packed cabinets (which I personally could understand and relate to to a degree, honestly); so I just wanted to throw the option out there.

YMMV, but in decades-old forts, ditching the tens of thousands of pieces of accumulated treasure trash via cleanowned has always had a noticeable effect on baseline FPS once the dumping cycle has finished. It might be less noticeable if baseline FPS was in the 40's after 20 years, but the extra 2-4 baseline FPS is incredibly noticeable at 20 FPS.

Major performance loss is fact that dwarves check everything.

Best solution is to close up unattended caverns or zones in your stronghold
