For ranged training make sure you only assign them to an archery range.
It might take a few cycles before they grab it and go to the range. You should see 'soldier: no activity' the rest of the time, which is not a particularly useful message but should eventually lead to them using the range.
If assigned to a barracks they seem to only ever do individual (non-ranged) drills regardless of whether they have bolts or not.
Indeed - any uniform will work (provided it's set up correctly), but depending who you listen to (and my own experience would support it) you've got to delete and re-form a squad after saving a changed/created loadout.
Yeah, the devs know it's bugged and it is a lot of darn work just for a solution that, itself, only "might work" due to unknown other issues, if such exist. :)
Count on it being fixed. When? /noidea It's a High Visibility bug and extremely annoying. It's going to be seen repeatedly by first-time players as well as vets, so it should be a high-priority fix, IMO. (Nobody should want all new players hitting a wall of bugs in their very first play-session. That's bad for business and this shuts down a high-vis game mechanic. :))
1) put ammo in its own stockpile with NO bins allowed. You should see all the bolts on the floor.
2) make any change to one of your archers equipment (such as delete the shields and gloves). apply changes... and watch them all go pick up equipment.
Play around with step 2 until you get results. This is consistently working for me.
-> set up squad, add dorfs with crossbow uniform -> set up another squad with crossbow uniform -> move dorfs from first squad to second
stupid but works
For the majority it works fine. Equipment replaces, always on, assigned archery range, ammo stock piles in and/or near range. It seems a few dwarfs just cant handle the mental strain of picking up bolts for their quiver. Sometimes reassigning equipment fixes it, sometimes it just moves to a few other dwarfs instead.
