Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress

Marksdwarves don't pick up ammo.
The dwarves I assign to being marksdwarves won't pick up ammo even though there's plenty of it in the stockpiles. They take their crossbows, but don't take the ammo.

It's kind of buggy. But fairly high on their to do list.

Wooden bolts should satisfy the default archer uniform, for training purposes. Don't delete this uniform, it's the only one that works reliably/at all.

For ranged training make sure you only assign them to an archery range.

It might take a few cycles before they grab it and go to the range. You should see 'soldier: no activity' the rest of the time, which is not a particularly useful message but should eventually lead to them using the range.

If assigned to a barracks they seem to only ever do individual (non-ranged) drills regardless of whether they have bolts or not.

The main concern is them not grabbing bolts when we're UNDER ATTACK and just going out to beat the enemy to death with their crossbows, which works okay-ISH if they have steel crossbows buuuuuuuut that's not what I made the crossbows for.

That is false.

Indeed - any uniform will work (provided it's set up correctly), but depending who you listen to (and my own experience would support it) you've got to delete and re-form a squad after saving a changed/created loadout.

You probably need to make new bolts as well.

So, make the uniform, then re-make the squad, then make NEW ammunition? That's some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Yeah, the devs know it's bugged and it is a lot of darn work just for a solution that, itself, only "might work" due to unknown other issues, if such exist. :)

Count on it being fixed. When? /noidea It's a High Visibility bug and extremely annoying. It's going to be seen repeatedly by first-time players as well as vets, so it should be a high-priority fix, IMO. (Nobody should want all new players hitting a wall of bugs in their very first play-session. That's bad for business and this shuts down a high-vis game mechanic. :))

How I fixed this issue in my games
1) put ammo in its own stockpile with NO bins allowed. You should see all the bolts on the floor.
2) make any change to one of your archers equipment (such as delete the shields and gloves). apply changes... and watch them all go pick up equipment.

Play around with step 2 until you get results. This is consistently working for me.

I suspect that making new bolts is what's doing the trick. But we've been remaking the squad as well, so those are the current instructions that work.

One thing the helped me specifically, beyond all the other suggestions, was to ensure the ammo stockpile was within the squad's archery range (as mentioned by harlequin_corps in another thread).

Never works for me on first squad, always works on second and subsequent squads...

-> set up squad, add dorfs with crossbow uniform -> set up another squad with crossbow uniform -> move dorfs from first squad to second

stupid but works

Is this the same bug as when they pickup and drop the bolts over and over until it says equipment mismatch? I have a handful of dwarfs that will experience this over about 40 marksdwarfs.
For the majority it works fine. Equipment replaces, always on, assigned archery range, ammo stock piles in and/or near range. It seems a few dwarfs just cant handle the mental strain of picking up bolts for their quiver. Sometimes reassigning equipment fixes it, sometimes it just moves to a few other dwarfs instead.

you need to make the uniform on a dummy squad and then apply to the real one you make afterwards as others have said above....its the only thing that works...I spent hours till I worked that out due to so much conflicting advice
