Empty / Frozen Mission Reports

I have experienced a bunch of strange behavior when I send dwarves out on the world map. Artifact and citizen recovery mission reports just freeze when I try to load them. The item/person is never recovered but the squad comes home. While writing this post I found that these are known bugs:

Is anyone here familiar enough with DFHack or other tools to suggest if there is a way to manually retrieve the person/item? Or make the person/item as being at the site so the above bugs don't cause the missions to hang?

I found that repeatedly raiding the site eventually worked. And I mean a standard raid, not a special recovery mission.

I assume I eventually killed the goblin who was holding the captive dwarven child in their inventory and then the child was able to return to the fort.

missions are very buggy, just avoid them if you can.
