Better way to engrave slabs needed
I have so many dead dwarfs and even though I have 4 stone workshops, it is taking me years to engrave all the slabs to get rid of the ghosts. At least let us order the list by engraving status, or even better let us create a work order to engrave automatically as soon as there are x unmemorialized and unengraved dwarves.

If you have the body around, just make coffins/caskets. Put in tomb and they will automatically load them up.

Slabs are reserved for the few cases where the body is unrecoverable.

Did you really lose all the bodies?

Tombs are not working exactly the way people were expecting or the way the UI says they do. See here for some info on how to get tombs to work:

Always worked that way. The primary way always have been coffin. The slabs are for the time you can't have the body (magma incident, nasty beast in the area, atom smasher not fully secured, falling troll from great height....).

Tomb used to work better in the past (just plop a coffin, no tomb needed). I do hope it makes a return.

I agree, it used to be ordered by un-engraved dead but now it's done by I think the order they died, also placing engraved slabs is chore as you have to open up the list of each materiel in order to find each engraved slap.

The problem is that you have to make a dedicated room for every coffin, now. Slabs can be placed back-to-back and are more space efficient (assuming you throw out the body).

It used to be you didn't need a zone for public coffins, you just needed to install them and then flag them as available for use (they'd default to "dont use").

Now you have to create ONE ZONE PER COFFIN to get the coffins to be used.

I think this was not intended and you're supposed to be able to create one tomb zone with lots of coffins in it sort of like a dormitory for the dead.

You shouldn't need an enclosed room per coffin, just a separate 1x1 tomb zone around each coffin.

I know. I mentioned it and said I would like to see the old "coffin for free" method come back.
Slabs were always a secondary way to bury the dead, for when you couldn't get the body.

You can make 1 tile tombs, so it's just as space efficient. Would be better if you could do a big tomb area that worked like a dormitory for corpses though.

umm..... interesting. Just realized. The necessity for putting in a door is only there for the multi zone select mechanic. If you click each zone by zone then yeah. you can set up a single 1x1 tomb. Means you have to make each zone manually instead of selecting 50 or 500 tombs in one click but yeah.. I get it. Will have to give it a shot to see if it actually works though.

it works very well, just slap a bunch of coffins on ground, select tomb zone, use paint, 1x1 on coffin and done. it is some manual work for each coffin, but saved space is worth it early on
