Silver Crossbows
I have read about them being gotten through trade I just don't know why I can't craft them.

Do you have silver bars? Are they accessible?

No I mean it isn't a build-able option. in the metal shop you can't make silver crossbow's I am wondering why?

Our dwarves are dumb and do not have the knowledge or ability to make silver crossbows.

Silver doesn't actually add anything to the crossbow itself, maybe, a minor boost when the dwarf has to bash a goblin in the head with it.

You can however, make silver bolts which is going to be 99% of the crossbow's actual use.

Ah, so it is indeed missing as an option. Probably has been that way since the beginning.

As far as I can remember.

I just find it kind of dumb they know how to make a crossbow and use silver but they can't make a silver crossbow. for now I am going to be using copper crossbows but since crossbows in melee act like hammers I wanted them to be silver for the damage buff.

In classic we used to be able to craft silver crossbow ?

Marksdwarves really like to bash stuff in the head. And no material give any real boost to crossbow efficiency as range weapon. So, you may as well go for glorified hammer for the inevitable moment they'll go into melee, and silver is a really good material for blunt weapons.
Also, give them a lightweight shield.

But you can't in this I looked up under orders to be sure I wasn't missing anything. Maybe a modder will help us out with this. Also I wonder if they would ever add schematics / research where your dwarfs could learn to build things that are set as exotic to them?

wouldn't gold/silver weapon boost dwarf morale? They would admire them, unlike wooden weapons

It's more complicated. Silver and gold (or any "rare material") will boost an item value and the happy thought they get for stuff like "good bedroom" (room value is based in item value). If they like the material itself (in their bio, preferences), they'll get happy thought to, I think ? But they can like iron or copper or whatever. So yes, if that guy like wood, he might be happier with a wooden crossbow.

They will get a happy thought for equipping a higher quality weapon (no matter the material). Since they also get better stats, it's a no brainer in making good quality gear.

Material might increase the potency of the happy thought ? I'm not sure though, but that's how it works with booze.

Apart from trying to make realistic sense of a video game, there is quite a distance from making balls out of some metal and making complex mechanisms for shooting said balls. As for the weight damage buff, steel is just a bit lighter than silver.

On a side thought, it'd be nice if silver ammo did extra damage to were-critters.
