Letting something out of a cage?
I purchased a cat in a cage so I could keep vermin down (I was not wise enough to bring a breeding pair with me to start with) but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to let the poor thing out. "Feels repentant after being confined" is the cat's current thoughts and I would very much like to let him out lol.

You have to actually place the cage first, like you would any other piece of furniture. Then select it and you'll have the option
Oooh I see, thank you.

If you make cage traps and capture goblins, you can install the goblin cage in the middle of your barracks, tell your squad to kill the goblin, and then release the goblin. Great training.

That sounds evil. I love it.

Also the cat is now free.

I've always assigned an animal to a Pen/Pasture zone and the dwarves will automatically take the cat out of the cage from the Animal stockpile without needing to go through constructing the cage.

Constructing the cage is still useful for caged invaders, though, so you can set it up and hook it up to a lever so that opening it happens in a more controlled manner.

I can hook them up to levers too? Well now I have all sorts of nasty ideas. I'm gonna build an arena under a glass roof and make captured goblins fight monsters. This is gonna be awesome. Thanks!

One of my favorite pastimes. That, and issuing Dwarven justice by having captives fight a few troglodytes. Don't worry, they deserve it.
