Learning old-school DF for Adventure mode
I really enjoy this game but one of the coolest features, which is after having built many fortresses being able to explore the ruins of your failed fortresses as a roguelike in adventure mode is sadly missing from the steam release. Is it worth learning old-school DF just to be able to play adventure mode?

Not too much to learn if you can play the steam version. Have to use your keyboard more than the mouse, but you can get very human-friendly graphics or even enable mouse controls with the Starter Pack https://dffd.bay12games.com/file.php?id=7622

I recommend using Phoebus graphics with ShizzleClean text. Curses_square graphics are pretty good if you want ascii-like graphics with a square shape instead of rectangle

It might be. Check out the adventure mode QuickStart on the wiki. I did find it entertaining to bite things in the neck, latch on firmly, and shake them around ripping out the throat with the detailed combat options. Wonder if that ever got nerfed….

The bogeymen didn’t stand a chance against my legendary axedwarf even with one arm and one leg due to his legendary crutch walking.

Biting is one of the less strong options for killing stuff available, doubt it got nerfed. Whips and throwing are still in the game so everything else is just for fun lol

Bogeymen got mostly removed, which I'm personally happy about but I'm sure people will miss the times where they actually managed to beat some in a fight

Alright, so I've heard that classic 50.04 does not have adventure mode anymore. So I should get DF 0.47.05, right? That one has Lazy Newb Pack if I'm correct.

50.x Will have adventure mode soon enough. Needs a little more time to be released. Until then you can play 47.05 for sure though, it's good fun. Adventure mode is basically an entirely new game compared to fortress mode.

Lazy Newb Pack is called PeridexisErrant's Starter Pack now. Name changed a while back but people still fondly remember it as Lazy Newb Pack. I linked the file's download location (Dwarf Fortress File Depot) in my first comment on this discussion thread.

You don't need to download Dwarf Fortress separately, it comes with the Starter Pack pre-installed together (which is possible for free due to Dwarf Fortress being freeware). And yes, it's 47.05. Just download the file, unzip in your favorite location (desktop works) and run Starter Pack Launcher. Mods for the game go in LNP>Mods and then activated in the launcher menu

Id say learn old school DF just for the experience.

you'll appreciate the steam version more for its UI, but also learn just HOW much is missing from steam :D

its a great experience if your willing to do the work, which isn't all that much

DF is not open source or it would have been forked like 10+ times already

hmmm I think you're right, I guess it's best described as regular freeware

just keep playing fort mode till adventure mode drops, its not worth it. better to keep learning and experiencing stuff in fort mode and salivate on ideas for adventure (with your same worlds!!!) when it arrives

Worth just downloading the starter pack, which is all included, just to mess about a bit for sure.

As a side note, my current 47.05 adventure mode started to crash out of the blue, just walking/flying about as a Crow man. I built a small shelter, bumped into a bunch of Goblins, barely managed to fly away, went back, they are all friendly, left site, and game consistently crashes now alas some 10 minutes in or whatever. I have tried to reload the save a handful of times. If anyone happens to know the reason for this 47.05 adventure mode crash, please share :D:
