IIRC, they don't have a civilization of their own. Mods can, of course, change that. (At least, that's only as far as I know as a noob)

They tend to get wiped out in world gen because they are small, weak, and primitive and live in caves that get attacked by megabeasts. They also cant make their own sites so they tend to be extremely rare even when they do survive. The steam version also makes them very difficult to locate on the map because you basically just have to hover over places manually to see if theyre owned by kobolds or not.

In advanced world gen make sure you enable the option that lets you see natural caves, as that's where they spawn. Sometimes they capture small settlements from other civs too, usually monasteries or small towns. Ive heard that increasing the maximum number of civs tends to help some of them survive.

Kobold "civs" are hidden on the map and are generally very small and likely to be wiped out if your history goes on long enough.

If you want some GCSs, you're better off setting traps in the second and third cavern layer.

I have a lone, one tile island with a volcano on my current world map, and the only local residents are kobolds! I actually want to make a fortress there once I see my current one to success.

I've found a "Kobold fort" on the worldgen map once out of the c16 large worlds i've created, i'm not certain whether it was a fort they built or an abandoned human fort they took over

Kobolds should be a little more common. Not so common they're a threat but common enough they're an annoyance. With a proclivity for raiding refuse piles and stealing jewelry and cups and mugs but that's just what I imagine them as.

They are rare, but I have seen 'em

one time i embarked a fortress and occupied the same location as a kobold cave on accident. was a constant source of stolen clothing until the good old hammerdwarves were sent in

"You may be small and fast but all I have to do is hit you once, dex nerds!"
