My current embark has almost what seems like 4 cavern layers, with the last one pressed up against my sea as well. can dig a single trench from a cavern floor to the lava, and its a -100 Z level. Random embarks are random. So yes yours could be a compressed cavern layer into ocean.
but ill first clear of this elemental plane of stone with my pikeman army ;)
In 0.50, the only way to wake the circus is to bother with the cosmic brownies in the lava sea, which are significantly more annoying to get through than the cotton candy spires.
There is (almost) no way you'll wake the circus on accident. Dig away, friend.
