dead creatures appearing all across my map.
So.. Is this a bug or glitch or something? Dead Monkfish are appearing randomly across my map and their corpses never decay or rot, literally the corpses have been across the map for almost two years now. Is there a way to fix this?

You could change your refuse handling in the standing orders to dump corpses found outside.. But that's carrying water to the sea.
I had also had a fort like this with hundreds of dead lungfish (vermin) after 1 year. Cleaning them up was a lost cause. In the end the ground was like more then 50% dead lungfish.

Great... I don't even understand what's killing them, I'm not in a hostile biome, it's not near any towers.. they are just appearing dead all over the place.

Cats kill vermin. But in the case I mentioned they were littered *all* over the map.
Non fish vermin does not give this problem (mice, creepy crawlers, ...)

is there a way to force cats to stay inside then? Because the monkfish are piling up into the hundreds

You can assign your cats to a pen, close your fort doors, or make your cats into biscuits. Making a cat pen inside of your food storage areas should have them serve a pest control purpose and keep them from the lungfish outside. Mostly. Sometimes animals go rouge and run out of there pens though.

I'll try making a pen inside then, its honestly so annoying that monkfish are vermin but dont despawn, what an annoying oversight x.x

Live vermin are used like a particle effect: they show up for a few ticks and then disappear. The game doesn’t keep track of anything about individual vermin in that state. If you pay attention, you can spot worms crawling in the grass, beetles climbing trees, fish swimming in the water, birds flitting about in the air, anthills and beehives dotting the fields, etc, etc. But when a cat kills some vermin, the corpse becomes a real object that interacts with the world in a normal way. They do decay away after a while, though they will decay more quickly in a refuse stockpile. They don’t have many negative effects unless they are inside though, so it is perfectly fine to just ignore them when they are outside.

I don’t see Monkfish in the raws though. Do you mean Lungfish? Lungfish are unique in that they are fish that can breathe air, and DF implements that by letting them wander around outside of the water. Real lungfish tend to stick to the mud near the water, but in DF you will find them up in trees and strolling around in meadows and so on, so their corpses tend to accumulate.

I meant Lungfish sorry, not sure why my brain corrected from Lung to Monk lol.

No need to apologize, our brains are pretty weird; it’s a well–known fact. At least that is a real type of fish that actually exists.

Check your "Others" list. What's listed in there? Something that could be killing them? Also, some players have been having issues with Lungfish attacking their Dorfs. Seen any combat logs, lately, to that effect?
