Dwarf Fortress

Can't uncage my purchased Tame Masked Lovebird
A caravan came to town and I traded some things for a tamed masked lovebird in a metal cage. I have followed the tutorial on pasturing an animal, and when I go to pasture him, he doesn't appear on the list of animals that can be pastured! Now I have a rare exotic bird in a cage in my front yard in the rain shivering in the middle of winter and my dwarves all just walk past him like I didn't spend the modern equivalent of 130 thousand dollars usd (1oz of gold is 1700 bucks) to buy this precious bird to fill my halls with bird songs.

Please help!

Well it's definitely true that my dwarves are not working efficiently we're working on that now. As far as the birdcage trick I will try it next time I decide to buy a bird.
I did watch that video lol it doesn't have any advice for you if your animal does not show up on the list.

Sold the bird. Not the problem anymore. Actually that fortress is now an open myasma filled tomb filled with corpses and ghosts of dwarves and dwarves turned were iguanas. Problem solved.
Masked Lovebird is a vermin, not regular animal. Did you assign it as a pet for a dwarf?
U cant release birds.

Ive also been trying this with zero joy.

Ive got all my caged birds in one room and the game calls it a 'zoo'.

No this is the first I've heard of this

I did have the cage stored in a storage area and still he was unable to be put to the pasture because he didn't show up on the list. I know this because I worked on it for about an hour. Couldn't get the lever to link to the cage.

I just sold him to the next caravan oh well. Try again later.
You have to build the cage. Ok. So. in the cages/restraints menu there's a clicky for Cage (also chain (which includes rope)), Click that and you will get the same selection criteria for placing a bed or door. You want to click on the [Select material after placement], Then you put the cage down where you want it, then scroll through the list until you find the actual cage that has your bird.. had.. I guess.. Had your bird in it, click that one, then wait for your dorfs to drag the cage over to where you placed it. Then once it's built, what you actually wanted to do, unless it was tamed, is set an Animal Training zone around the cage, set a trainer for it and train it until it's tamed. If it is tamed then you can link a lever to open the cage and then assign it as a pet.. maybe.. Don't quote me on that. I only know grizzly bears and war dogs.. Also a War Elephant for whatever reason.
AFAIK to release any animal from a cage you have to have the cage built, then select the cage and unassign the animal from the cage, just like you would assign one to a cage. After that a dorf will eventually let them loose and if it's not assigned to a zone it'll roam around.

You don't need to have the cage built, you can assign animals to a pasture straight from an unbuilt cage.

You need to build cages if you want to open them with a lever.

This does not work for vermin because they are tracked differently. AFAK the only way to get vermin out of a cage is to assign them to a job (process animal to. . .) or as a pet. You can also release them via cage/lever (i think. I have never tried this with vermin myself), but I have no idea how the game will handle a tame vermin released this way since they are transient creatures that pop into and out of existence (pet vermin are tracked in the inventory of the owner, not as an individual entity so this is not a problem for them).
