Sold the bird. Not the problem anymore. Actually that fortress is now an open myasma filled tomb filled with corpses and ghosts of dwarves and dwarves turned were iguanas. Problem solved.
Ive also been trying this with zero joy.
Ive got all my caged birds in one room and the game calls it a 'zoo'.
You need to build cages if you want to open them with a lever.
This does not work for vermin because they are tracked differently. AFAK the only way to get vermin out of a cage is to assign them to a job (process animal to. . .) or as a pet. You can also release them via cage/lever (i think. I have never tried this with vermin myself), but I have no idea how the game will handle a tame vermin released this way since they are transient creatures that pop into and out of existence (pet vermin are tracked in the inventory of the owner, not as an individual entity so this is not a problem for them).
