I think I may be playing a world were I am the last dwarf colony XD

Sometimes stuff happens faster than you are prepared for. But it's up to you how you want to handle it. Maybe the king will have a tragic accident while strolling through your fortress...

He was eaten by a zombie.
The queen survived though.

So, the queen is dead.
Killed by a human pikeman who has a flashing name
He is currently locked in my craft room.
his 4 human buddies also with flashing names are outside fighting against the undead sieging my fortress outside. and they are winning.
My population is now 5, but goo news. I have a king again.
it is my legendary miner. The only survivor of my original population.
He has an edict to make picks.
Shame all my metal is by the magma forges where the pikeman is.
He will... starve to death eventually right?

He will starve to death, this is an human. They're the second biologically weakest sapient creature in the world (not counting beastmens), able to live a measly 90 years, having jokes in lieu and place of actual resilient livers and needing food and water to support their height.

if the wolrd is young and the population small it can happen, once in one of my emarbks my leader was named king as soon as i started.

Check your world map. It's possible the capital was taken by an invading army and the king picked your hole in the ground to flee to. One of my forts had all kinds of nobles constantly visiting. Turns out goblins had seized quite a few of my civ's forts, including the capital. In that game I had the king show up quite early. (And then accidentally sent him off to re-take one of the other forts... whoops, though he did come back to hang out at the temple.)

Yup.
my leader got named king shortly after the first migrant wave.
Then got eaten by a zombie.
My new leader then got elevated to king and killed by a pikeman.
Then my miner who got voted in as my leader got to be the new king...
He survived!
He isn't dead yet!

He is miserable because I haven't got a single artifact in my fort yet, and the most fancy thing I have is a single obsidian door, but soon that will change!
The repairs to the obsidian farm (I used it to flood my craft area to kill the pikeman) are almost done! Then I can make lots of fancy black stone items for glorious leader!
Also he keeps demanding I make more picks....
ohh and a single migrant wave took my population back to 15 so yay!!! back to where I was only with a king now!

Edit: second leader became queen, not king XD

Sounds like some ♥♥♥♥ is going down in your world and your home civilization is dying. This might affect your population growth as it might mean no new migrants in the near future.
