Dwarf Fortress

Dwarf Fortress

PSA don't build stepladders dwarves will get stuck in trees like cats
I set gathering spots for all the fruit trees around my fort because I was low on liquor and that turned out to be a mistake. I had my carpenter make some stepladders to help with this and thus about 10 dwarves ended up stuck in trees probably because another dwarve decided to take their stepladders to use themselves.

Not only that, my dwarves won't stop gathering the leaves and such even after i deleted the zones, I only wanted a stockpile of fruit for booze not for them to constantly go out of the fort.

When creating a "gathering zone" you have option to gather just fallen fruits (read the 3 green boxes up left in your zoning details, almost same spot where you design a meeting zone as a tavern).
"uncheck" the options you don't want to use
That way no stuck in trees issues.

I usually leave it on and cut the tree if I notice them stuck...if not...we'll there's always more wax workers, fisherdwarves and potash makers immigrating to refill the ranks of my gather/hauling corp.

Have enough stepladders (one for each dwarf assigned to plant gathering)

zones do seem a bit buggy right now. they don't seem to really delete.

I tend to move the zone if its gathering, fishing etc. also,
there are options to prevent ALL of your dwarfs trying to gather, fish, collect water.

I don't create gathering zones... Am I missing out?

Change 'everyone does this' for gathering in the labor menu and only set the same number of dwarves to gather as you have stepladders otherwise they all will run around stealing them out from under each other while they're still in the trees and leaving them to die.

Edit: go into the construction menu and construct stairs into the trees to rescue them. Make sure the space above the stairs is open. If there are leaves or branches directly above the stairs it won't work as dwarves can't dig up for some reason.

not really.
you can do it manually. they will pick up stuff from ground and in tress if you have one...

you may get spammed by 'a kea has stolen a stepladder' a lot XD

Not really, I do it because I just want diversity for drinks and my Dorfs. That is only if surface is somewhat safe though.

I like them to have plum wine, cider, etc.
Funny thing is, when they have that much choice, the only last alcool that remains, is always the one made out of plump helmet... so I guess they drink it if only choice but they seem to loooove the choice I provide 🤣
But I give them way too much choice, between River spirit, the various beers, the tree fuits wine, etc.

The only good thing you have while not collecting those fruits is the insane amount of useless "seeds" you have from those trees that you can't do Sh#* with, and have to sell them or destroy them to not be burried under seeds.

Given time, the fruit will fall from some (all?) of the trees and can also be gathered that way. Not as efficient and quick, but it keeps you from having to rescue dwarves from trees. :) I just set up the gather fruit gathering zone around the trees, and don't give them stepladders. They gather from the ground when they can.

My fortress lives off of harvesting and farming the edible plants and fruit at the base of the volcano. I replant the seeds of as many as I can (you have to make the farm plot in the same biome/z-level or the fields will only have a 'leave fallow' option), so that I've created a sustainable source instead of relying upon natural growth to keep up with the population demand.

This isn't a bug.. A dorf places a stepladder and uses it to climb into a tree to get an apple. Another dorf comes along and takes the stepladder to climb another tree to get another apple. The first dorf is then stuck in the tree and dies of dehydration. Not a bug.

It's still an issue, though I'd call it more of an oversight. The initial user should reserve the ladder until they are done with it.

when its a bug that makes the brothers laugh they call it a feature and it gets shifted downward on the priority list

I have to admit i always thought its funny; still cracks me up every time i see it happening i even find yaks, lamas and goblins in trees :steamhappy:

Nah, this ♥♥♥♥ happens all the time in real life. Men have burned to death in industrial kilns because they failed to tag out the equipment before a badly timed shift change.

That is not an equivalent scenario. In that scenario, they made an error. The ladder guys didn't.
