Door v floodgate

If I hook a door to a lever it can only be opened via the lever. This makes it an effective floodgate. Is there some other function to floodgates, or can I just use doors?

the only case and it's a strange one I'll admit is where you don't have an adjacent wall, think you might even be able to get around that by building one then deconstructing it though, I've only really used floodgates once in as a retracting checkerboard flow control.
