elk birb eggs

so ive got 4 trained elk birds, 2 male and 2 female, ive set a pasture and put in some nest boxes, so will they automatically breed or will my dwarves collect the eggs before they hatch?

You can either manually forbid the eggs to stop them from being collected, or fence off the zone and build a door. Then you can forbid the door and not worry about it until they hatch. Be warned that the whole stack hatches so you will get like 20 babies at once.

Yea, any egg layers can have explosive population growth as pets. I almost always embark with 10 female and 2 male chickens. They don't have to have grass so you can shove em into a room underground with no issue. So i keep 6 females in one room for food eggs. Then i leave the others in another room with the door forbidden. Then when the chicksplosion happens i butcher all but a few and relock the door. pretty good for meat and bones and totems for trade.

i would only put down one nest box so far ive read there is a bug with eg laying grazers starve using a nest box.

I had no idea you could train them let alone farm them for eggs!

you can train nearly everything i got a rare jabberer bird but yet find a partner for it.

Damn. I need to do more with pets. I have a mod I think that lets me train war capybaras!
