There is talk that the bridge imperviousness may be changed in some future update. But until that happens, bridges, like walls, are a "perfect" defense.

A floodgate can become stuck on something that water pressure may bring into its area. A bridge would either throw or atom-smash anything in its way.
You can use floodgates for more than just fluid management, too; they just become an impassable to most creature block when enabled. So if you want to raise some walls that have a little less crushing potential than bridges, you can use floodgates.
