Roofs
I am trying to just build a simple keep over my trade depot and I can't figure out if there is a way to build a roof over it or not. The best I've managed to do was go up a level and build some walls (walls name changed to pillars) over the area but that didn't work out as they only did the perimeter of the area. I also just tried to build a floor over the area as well and it wouldn't let me.

Step 4) Go up 1 z-level. You will see the tops of the walls. You can only place floor constructions adjacent to something that has a "top" at the bottom of your z-level. So next to the top of the wall, place your floor request. As long as you have 1 tile access to your stockpile, you can make the layout as large as you want. But you can't add a new construction next to an unbuilt construction. You have to wait until it gets built to add on.

Building floors on top is the method, I'd double check how you are trying to get on top of the walls to do that flooring. Typically just a set of stairs next to the walls should be enough.

Another mistake new players make is trying to designate the floor when the z level is not set to the correct layer.

You can build a floor on the level above the first one. Your dwarves need to be able to reach the spot to place a floor there, so you should build a staircase on the outside of the structure. Floors can't be built on top of walls (because the top of walls already have their own floor on them) but you can build it in the empty space between walls.

Once it's done you can deconstruct the staircase if you want. Do one piece at a time, starting from the top part.

Not to be rude, but have you tried google instead of flooding the discussion with more of the same question others have done in the past? Pretty much all the information you will ever need to know, or want to know, is already out there.
