Is this version of Steam worth it?
What are the advantages of the Steam version against the classic version?

Graphics? I like the ascii art and I can change the tile set whenever I want.

To getting Support? The community work is huge.

To support creators? Yes, is a good reason, but you can support the creators by PayPal donations.

How many of the purchases are of people didn't play before to the game? Don't lie yourself, a very few purchases are for people who didn't play never to DF classic, and the most of them will never play to it when they loose the firsts parties.

So, first up. Yes. Premium is literally a graphics package with some music.

You CAN support the creators by PayPal donations, but there's a mentality thing at play.
-People have money in their steam wallet they are less attached to than money in their bank account.
-People get to own a product. People love owning products.

They've always had donations and patreon, and are all of a sudden millionaires now that the game's on Steam. Because consumerism. But many people are happy to support it cuz they already liked it, or they've always wanted to play it and couldn't penetrate the ascii.

By the way, yes, it's financially better to pay them via their Paypal donations, than to buy the steam version, as they only get about $16.80 (estimation, may not be accurate) for every $30 unit.

Is it worth it, though? Literally every person you ask will have a different answer. There is no objective yes or no. Even though I'm fully aware it's a graphics pack I still say yes, because 'worth it' will always be subjective and situational.

I'd say if you're happy with the free version then its not worth it based solely on what you pay for versus what you get, steam version is very good for people that could never get into the free version, the lack of external tools for the steam version like therapist, DFHack and legends viewer have been pretty big downsides against the steam version for me personally.

And there's the problem with "is it worth it", because Mr Denix just said no and yet he's absolutely correct. And I said yes, and I'm absolutely correct as well lol. Because the question cannot have an objective answer. It is a subjective-only question.

If you can tolerate the ascii graphics or wait for fan tilesets, you are not the target demographic for the steam version and should definitely play the free version. Classic will receive lifelong updates for free in tandem with Premium.
Unless you just, wanna own it, or give them money in exchange for a thing with arguably nebulous value, which is also valid lol.

Only if you're looking to use the tileset that they've made, other than that, it's exactly the same as the one available on their website.

I bought it because the tileset looked good and I wanted to support the devs, I've been playing the game for a few years and I've had a blast with it. 30€ for that experience was a steal, I didn't have to, but I wanted to show my appreciation to the devs for making a joyful experience for free. Each to their own.

Devs like these are few and far between and deserve every recognition they can get, it's not every day you're given something with quality without the expectation of something in return.

I mean, how many players that have played DF throughout the years can say they give artifact items to the trader caravan every year they arrive?

The number of previous devs that continued to release a free version of their product in tandem with the paid version can only be counted on one hand, but only if you hold up 0 fingers lol.

Is the graphics pack and ambiance music worth the money to you?
Yes: Buy this version.
No: Play the free version.

The game itself remains the same.

I have trouble telling what you're trying to say, but the Steam graphics + interface make the game so much more accessible. I played a tiny bit in 2012, but now I can figure out basically everything and have played several forts. It's actually quite easy to play in the Steam version, to the extent that I wonder if the legendary difficulty might not stem more from UI and bug issues than anything else.

For me? Yes. For you or anyone else? I have no idea.

Dwarf Fortress isn't a "game" on "Steam". Steam is simply one aspect of the Dwarf Fortress planetary reclamation project. If you don't wish to participate in history, then it's not worth it. If you care about our future society you should buy a copy. Interface is irrelevant. Gameplay is irrelevant. Resistance is futile. You will submit.

I just bought it to give money to the devs. I'm too lazy to figure out how I could donate them money so I never gave them any before.

The graphics and new UI is nice. I like to see what the devs think a gorlak or a beak dog looks like.

But the free version is fine for me and it's also got Adv Mode. I guess if you're really on a budget and want to save the money, you could just play the free version and then give the devs some money later on.

I guess my question is, "why do you care". People who love DF bought the game. People who had never played before bought the game. The game beat 2nd month sales expectations on the first day. It was a huge success for the developer.

Why do you care?

I am waiting to see how responsive the devs are in their development, and if a few bugs get fixed in a timely fashion. Namely the saving bug which the devs are apparently aware of.

Posts like this are concerning to me.

Good luck with that. The Mantis bugtracker database has reproducable bugs which are classified as "severe", yet they have not been resolved for like a decade or so.

If it's really gamebreaking or leads to crashes, chances are the priority is bumped up to "asap". If there's any kind of workaround, chances are that you'll wait until 2050 before somebody does something about it.

You totally neglect the new UI, which really improves the game quite a bit. In all I want to encourage other publishers to consider the not Disney toddler games. I'm sick of the eye candy fluff that seldom adds to a game apart from new hardware requirements and nothing new or original in game design. DF is a giant leap in game design and well worth a few bucks.
There are many tools for improve the UI for the classic version. Near everyone plays with therapist, dfhack and customized tilesets for classic version.
Rainbow Jeremy Dec 30, 2022 @ 11:31am
lol why do you think you are going to talk df out of being wildly successful on here
too late anyway
