Can't hit Royal Bedroom
I don't know what else to do, I've got a 7x6 room with silver engraved floors, platinum and silver statues (1 gem encrusted), silver chests, silver weapon/armor racks, and 2 artifacts on display, 1 of which says ~8000 value.

Is there something special needed for Royal tier?

Did you make sure that your noble doesn't have any other bedrooms, which might be much worse than the nice one you built? Keep in mind that they share a bedroom with their spouse, if married.

I did find one other bedroom after I posted this, removed him from that, even deleted the silver room from him entirely, made sure he had "No Quarters" assigned, then redid the bedroom designation for him. Still says Grand -> Needs Royal...

Edit:: I also now have 4 artifacts on display in his room, 1k, 8k x2 and 6k values

Needs to be bigger. I think. 7x6 is tiny.. try making it 15x15 or so with supports.

There are a few other things that might affect room quality besides value, like is the room completely surrounded by walls (and a door) or is there another room overlapping the bedroom?

I went to 8x6 and it jumped to Royal... My Royal Dining room was only 6x6, didn't have silver floors and was already considered Royal so I didn't think size was the issue.

The floor space was not shared with any other rooms, but walls overlapped with the Throne Room. It was 100% enclosed by walls and a door, including corners. Apparently all I needed was 1 more column of silver floors because making it 8x6 instead of 7x6 seemed to do the trick.

Overlapping walls should be no problem for room value, at least they never were.

No, it's just that the amount of value needed to hit Royal is very high. I'd make the monarch's bedroom/office/dining hall fairly large (7x7+) so you have room to work with. There's a ton of space given to you in DF, there's no reason to not make use of it. Engrave everything, and just keep throwing things in there until you get it. There's plenty of tricks to do, and remember you can encrust/stud just about anything.

Start making a habit of building a stockpile for created artifacts far away from your usual stockpiles. Consider keeping the door locked most of the time and only unlocking it for awhile after someone's had a great success with a strange mood. If you put just one of these artifact-level things in a bedroom (furniture, or even a shiny rock on a stand), it'll blow way past the limit for "royalty" in one go.

add adamantine door I think u will hit like grand room even the size at 3x3 but I suppose u have to spam statues to get it to royal. I guess try spam adamantine statues might do too
if u still have not found that yet then make large room and add even more statues

I definitely had my mayor's dining room backslide after I overlapped walls with his bedroom. Removed the wall from his bedroom and boom, dining room was OK again.

Did you paint the rooms yourself or did you use the multi feature? If there is any overlap, you should see it when you select the room in the zone menu/modus.

But maybe it's specific for nobles, that they want thicker walls, dunno.

Painted it myself. So it's entirely possible it was user error. :)

After my king died and another one stepped up, I noticed that his opinion of his rooms went from green down to yellow, even though nothing had changed about the rooms, all the value remained the same, even after making sure he doesn't have any other rooms. Adding even more value to it eventually fixed it but still odd, it's like there's more to the requirements now than just pure value.

Dwarfs can appraise room higher or lower if this room has images/statues of something they like/dislike.
