Dwarf Fortress

Justice menu is a mess
So I just had an incident of dwarves in my fort being found dead and drained all of their blood. Must be a neck romancer. I have three witnesses so I'd like to go about questioning each of them to seeif they know anything. Fair enough.

Problem is, the list you get after you press "Interrogate" is a list of all CREATURES in and around your fort, dead or alive. The list doesn't seem to be in any particular order and has no search function. It's a mess and borderline unusable in its current state.

Either the menu needs additional functionality or the system needs to be reworked. I'd be pretty happy if my Captain or Sheriff just investigated however they see fit and skip the player input altogether.

Thanks. Thoughts?

Oh, and an automated court system. Why, for the love of the sacred, does God have to tick through every single court verdict instead of the dwarves handling them themselves after enough time has passed to make it apparent he's not interested?

I wouldn't mind a bit of passive investigation, sure. If they prioritized player-designated interrogations but did snooping of their own in the meantime, that'd be the best of both worlds.

If there are witnesses that have identified one or more suspects, those suspects will be at the top of the list with the number of witnesses who accuse them.

If there aren't any witnesses, well... Everyone is a suspect. :)

Exactly. DF as the "story generator" it tries to be would benefit from the ability to just sit back and watch as your dwarves do their thing.

Some sorting and list love is what this game needs above all. The justice list OP mentions shows *every* creature ; including your 94 turkeys and that salty cavecroc on elevation -56

would also be nice if the damn thing didn't close every time you clicked anything too.

One of the worst things I've noticed about JUSTICE ... is that dwarves have two names. A dwarven name (i.e. "Farkar Olonspar") and a translated name (i.e. "Farkar Swordswelter"). The dwarven name comes up in most searches (i.e. the "creatures" tab) ... but when a justice witness or accusation comes up, they give the translated name. This makes finding someone in the justice list EXTREMELY hard (especially if you have 200 dwarves and LOTS of visitors!!!!!).

Another Example .... someone accused a "Bax Dreadnumber" ... but in the interrogation justice list, he comes up as "Bax Bgnosgonut". Bax was easy to find, but in a list of TONS of creatures, it can get lost or passed very quickly (especially if someone has the SAME first name).

Also, I hate that CAGED and CAPTURED creatures appear in the interrogation list.... they should have their own tab.

I've tried "nicknaming" each dwarf using their profession and their translated name (so the name appears "'Carpenter Swordswelter' Olonspar". So, if someone witnesses someone named "Swordswelter", I can now find the dwarf easier.

Really, the premium DF port doesn't utilize it's graphical interface that well.
All menus are still lists like before, but with added pictures.
In menus that have a list of dwarves for a position (assigning nobles, militia squad members, workshop owners etc.) it would be really great if you could click on the dawrf's sprite and have it open the dwarf's screen like you do if you click on the dwarf in the world or use the (sometimes present, sometimes not) magnifying glass button to see more info about the dwarf.
The game could really benefit from having the ability to open multiple info windows at once and drag them around. Also mouse-over tooltips would be nice.

To get interrogations done faster I've made a burrow in my inn and have put my guardcaptains office there too. It's still very tedious though, with a lot of micromanagement, nanomanagement even.

you forgot to mention the extra annoyance factor that a dwarf in a case will be named with his nickname instead of his real name, so that makes it extra confusing to actually find the implicated individual :steamhappy:

haha somehow i think this whole confusing state of affairs is more or less intended as to evoke some kind of cluedo-style mystery vibe.. luckily most cases are pretty straightforward and concern either a misconduct spiral, a theft or a random accusation roll because of violation of orders.

imo its mostly the theft-cases that can have interesting plots
