Temple quality is ? out of 2000, won't increase with furniture.
I have two statues, engravings, fully smoothed walls/floors, an altar and the quality of the zone won't go up no matter what I put in, my temple is still reading as a shrine. Not sure what to do outside of just making the room much bigger than it currently is and starting over on the decor.

Sounds like you might need to assign someone to the broker position. i believe they're the ones that do all the appraising of stuff in your fort.

So...I need a broker to determine the value of religious stuff...?

"Welcome to Dwarf Fortress", then?

The value is changing in the background but it doesnt show the exact number, or small changes, only when u reach a new threshold. Im not sure if that would change with an appraiser.

Engravings only really help much if theyre masterpieces by legendary Engravers (can give few 100 points each), the best way to get cheap points is by putting an artifact on a pedestrial, or other masterpieces. Crafting Gold Blocks etc. and making the walls and floors out of them also works.

Putting cheap furniture in or crude drawings on walls doesnt really do much.

statues made by a novice worth at most 200*.
you will need way more statues than 2. or better crafters to do your furniture

No, a broker is needed to determine the value of /anything/. He's your numbers guy after all.

As for your temple, putting armor and weaopn stands help, as well as smoothing and engraving the room to start off with

Lots of instruments and music in the chests, lots of performers, etc. Lots of gold, plat, silver, etc.

In DF your broker is equivalent to an appraiser.

The empty floor space needs to be 25 tiles. So 25 tiles plus any furniture including doors. Its called dancing floor I think. I can't point you at it right now.

So all you need is an empty space 5x5. Dig out what you want to add furniture.

It maters a lot of the altar and statues are made of rock or of gold.

You need more like high quality gold or platinum stuff and such to get room value to a good places. If your most expensive metal is like silver then it just needs more statues and chests.

You can stick furniture artefacts in as well. Even if it is like an animal trap or a flood gate, just put it in the middle of the temple and the value of the artefact is added to the room.

Bookkeeper just counts stuff, broker can tell what they are worth.

I ended up making the temple bigger, re-smoothed everything, did a more elaborate design with engravings and replaced the altar with a silver one. That did the trick!

Glad it worked! But are you able to still see the estimated value of the place? ([Z]ones and click the temple and check).

I assigned a broker and yes, that did the trick. I was able to see the actual numbers for the value of items. Then an ettin child showed up, shortly followed by a cyclops so I had to make an emergency hospital for my hunters, since I had barely started building a military.

For future embarks, it's always beneficial to make a Dwarf a broker at the start and give him some Negotiation / Appraiser skills. The latter being the exact skill for the topic at hand.
