Dwarf Fortress

How deep is 'too deep'?
I've seen the mantra "Don't dig too deep or too greedily" a couple times, and it's got me wondering what is too deep? I've learned that the depth value goes negative, is anything negative 'too deep'? Or perhaps halfway between surface and 0?

When is my greedy foray into digging deeper going to get me murderized?

Assuming things I learned over a decade ago in the original dwarf fortress remain true.
You wont accidentally go "too Deep". It takes a fair bit of effort and there will be at least one or two significant obstacles to overcome. Just digging down wont be what ends you. Stealing the riches you find might though.

Don't dig down in your fortress, Dig down OUTSIDE your fortress, so when the happy happy clown car full of fun comes up they come up OUTSIDE your walls. Behind your moat, under the drawbridge within full view of ALL your marksdorfs.

I think what ppl mean by 'too deep'
is similar to what adults used to do (we now do ourselves) when around kids.
they spell the word so the kids don't understand the meaning.

when ppl say don't dig too deep, it tends to be implying some secret.
only those who understand the meaning because they have done it, will know.

SO.... time to pop your cherry.
dig ALL the way down :D
see what happens :P

maybe nothing will happen...
(that would be sad) :(

You'll keep thinking there's nothing more... but there is.

Not forever of course, but you may think you're at "the bottom" when you're really not.

You'll know.

In this version, it's harder to do "the thing" that will cause "the other thing".
Merely digging deep won't cause the thing.

But saying "Digging deep" is easier than saying "digging greedily" or "digging curiously"

Alrighty, Thanks for the replies all. My curiosity is satisfied, And my fear of making my base deeper/larger is sufficiently reduced. I know I'll lose eventually, Just rather play long enough to get a really good grasp of most things before/without getting unceremoniously romped by a beast from the depths because I wanted an extra floor for storage or something.

I think it supposed to be a reference to Lord of the Rings, were the Dwarfs of Moria "digged to deep" to search for riches and accidently freed a sealed Balrog (Ancient horror thingy) and thus had to flee their home.

Same applies to this game, you may accidently open a cavern with fun inside.
