Military won't keep equipment
I've been playing DF for almost 10 years. I've never had this problem before. Every time a squad is scheduled to stop training, they drop their equipment and run around naked. Every time they start training again, they drop their civy clothes and start training with just a shield and (sometimes) a weapon.

I have my main squad set to train half the time, since this fort is still small and I need their part-time labor. I used the default "staggered training" schedule. When I noticed them dropping their gear all the time, I checked the schedule and found that the off duty portions are set to "Equip/orders only" by default. I tried modifying this for each off-duty month, so that they're all "Equip/always." For some reason, this changes the text in the schedule to "no orders" instead of "off duty." And nothing changed - they continue to strip every time a "no orders" month starts. I'm tired of seeing naked dorfs.

What am I doing wrong? I've learned that problems like this are almost always caused by user error, rather than a bug, but I'm stumped.

I have the problem that like 8 Dwarfs have their equipment, 2 are naked and have no weapon (Storage is full with weapons and so on)
Other Squad is not updating their equipment, they do not pick up any new armor, only one of the 10 does it. didnt find a fix yet does anyone have a idea?

It's a bit weird how that screen works and Squads in general, with some hard bugs.

Some random bits of advice, since this gets me worked up, too, and I tend to ramble anyway...

The best fix is to just go ahead and create a new Custom Uniform set, to be sure you are starting out from scratch. Don't delete any of the Default sets, just create a new Custom one for each type of Uniform you're creating.

Try to assign all your Dorfs to the squad that you want in that squad, first. Why? Assigning new Dorfs to an existing squad seems to force one to have to re-assign the Uniform again to get it working properly. (Not always, but sometimes... ymmv)

Make sure that set is set up as you want it, since for some dumb reason they can't be appropriately edited on the fly, IMO. (Mixed results)

Make sure that it is set to "Always Wear." ...

OR, if you really don't like that, you need give them their intermittent training schedule in THREE month segments, to let them go through their inventory checks fully for at least a month on their own... If you're really flush with all needed items and they're not constantly locked out by Dorfs temporarily claiming their bins, you may be able to get away with a shorter Training/Duty period and allow Dorfs to change out of their Uniforms You can avoid long assignment periods, somewhat, by making frequent use of the "Upgrade Uniform" button during shorter periods, which forces them to re-check Stockpiles for gear. That's the micromangement you'll have to do if you don't schedule those three-month or so periods and want them to wear civvies when not training or on- duty. No, that button doesn't "Upgrade" anything, it just forces an equipment re-check, because... I have no clue why. Engrish problems?

For Quivers, you can't directly assign those - The equip order for those comes from being assigned a missile weapon.

For Backpacks, you can't assign those either. They come with the Squad assignment. Currently, they force Dorfs to drop any food they're eating out of them any time any order or behavior can interrupt eating. The best solution may be to not have any backpacks in your Fortress unless you enjoy Miasma.

Make sure the Uniform is the way you want it, otherwise trying to edit it later is just going to suck and may be somewhat unpredictable.

Important - Weapon Rack and Armor Stands in a Barracks get stripped of their stored items by Civilian Dwarfs when Squads are using them in the Barracks to store their gear. The occupying Squad Members see those as valid storage spots, the Civvies do not. The solution is to put in a separate Stockpile dedicated to Weapons and Armor, only.

Don't store bolts in Bins so that Markdwarves can pick them up, directly. Bin Claiming while equipping ends up preventing Dorfs from getting ammo. (Maybe? Various issues, there.)

(Some tutes here would apply, so watch 'em or read 'em. If they seem wrong, they probably are. Not every youtuber/provider is correct in what they demostrate in my experience. I've found some newly popular ones that are wrong/inaccurate in some way. Some have corrected that, some have not bothered to.)

For the schedule, it's an obtuse system... Use Copy to Copy Off-duty blocks from that column to then Paste it in the Intermittent Column for the appropriate month is that's what you want for that month. Use the On-Duty, as well, if that's what you want in that Intermittent Month. Training is self-explanatory, but do the same where needed.

Edit as you wish and if that month that you edited is the way you want their behaviors to go in other months, copy/paste that where you wish, as needed.

Applicable Note: When you're looking at your Squad List pop-out and see "No Orders" that doesn't refer to the Assigned Orders you've already given them... It only refers to the manual orders that you've given them that are different from the regime they're currently following. Why? Probably because they couldn't fit a read of the current Schedule orders they're following and still needed a way for the player to see the squads they've specifically ordered to do a New Order, like during a siege. It's.. just a somewhat ill-conceived and confusing menu system, to be honest.

It's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ system all around yea, I just deleted a world becouse it was causing me a seizure seing dwarfs unequip their stuff and then proceed to fight a caveswallow invasion x5...

Why don't dwarfs equip stuff? Why do they get stuff assigned but not pick it up? Why don't they drop their stuff in the barracks? They are going there anyways, might as well haul the stuff to the barracks and then equip whatever instead.

There is a fail in how the game processes the logic of equiping armour, couse no sane person would just go nude and then proceed to run thru a raging battlefield just to grab some pants, it makes no sense.

Are you in a fight? Yea? Why would you drop your equipment then? Are you dumb?

I'm trying to get more dwarf in my fortress but it's currently impossible, I reliably lose dwarfs to them being idiots and it's just infuriating, it's not fun and it's certainly stupid to have to check if maybe some dwarf is near enemies so he doesn't just charge nude into whatever threat he sees while going to equip some socks.

Not even gonna talk about the lag it creates having 40+ dwarfs drop 12 pieces of equipment on the ground and then go grab more...

Why did you necro an old post to whine instead of simply asking for help in a new one?

It's still an issue. It doesn't matter if the thread is 8 months old. :rebellion:
