Dwarves not using chests at all.
I have chests in every bedroom and in almost all rooms. The hospital won't fill the chests with supplies and the barracks won't use chests or cabinets for armor/weapon storage. I even have the barracks set for the squad to use them both. I had to make a stockpile next to the barracks that only accepts armor and weapons.

I'm in the end of my 3rd year with 95 population.

Well, the Barracks issue with Weapon Racks and Armor Stands is a true bug - Civilians will clear those out when Squad Members try to store Weapons/Armor in them. They likely don't "see" those as valid stockpiles, but Squad Members assigned to the Barracks do see them that way. Therefore, dedicated Stockpiles for Armor and Weapons must be used in Barracks to serve that function, for now.

Hospitals, though, should be using those chests. (Mine does) Check to be sure that at least Splints and Powder for casts are being stored there to ensure they're at least working properly. (Also - Don't put any other storage containers in there other than exactly what the hospital calls for. No cabinets, IIRC.)

An issue can arise with Cloth and Clothing production that can take Thread and Cloth from regular stockpiles, but shouldn't be taking it from Hospital Chests. ("Shouldn't") One thing you can do is to use the Order Menu to set up Orders for both Cloth and Clothing production that leaves a minimum amount of Thread and Cloth untouched and will not begin until that minimum amount is present, forcing it to also end once the Order is completed and that supply drops below its Start point. Use Thread Production (process plants) and Cloth Production (weave) to ensure a minimum stockpile that is above the Start Condition for Cloth weaving and Clothing production, as welll.

That way, at least a minimum amount of both Thread and Cloth is in stock, available for use in the Hospital.

Dorfs should be using Chests in Bedrooms to store possessions. If they have them, at least. I recall seeing at least one chest in use, but haven't really checked many of those in Bedrooms. I know they still love dumping their clothes on the Floor, there, even if they have Cabinets, but I am not sure how those "possessions" mechanics are supposed to work.

Mine prefer to use the cabinets for all their stuff. I'm not sure the chests are necessary.

They will drop worn-out clothing on the floor. It becomes un-owned after one season, and will then get automatically taken to your dump if you: 1) have a garbage dump configured to accept "other", and 2) have your Standing Orders under Refuse and Dumping set to enable "dump other items".

AH! It "automatically" becomes unowned?

That's revolutionary knowledge and you should spread it... :) Thanks very much for that info! (There have been lots of complaints on the subject, but this is the first I've heard it does something "automatically" to affect a de-cluttering solution. :))

The player-tendency would be to assume that once owned, always owned... and not seeing Dorfs picking such items up leads to frustration and long sessions of clicking and manually ordering Dumping.

Though, I'm very often seeing clothing that is pretty darn useable. "Some wear" and the like, not unusable or tattered. I've been ordering all Squads to Always Wear their armor, so I figured it was Dorfs getting upgraded clothing. Any idea, there?

Well, "automatically" so long as you change a number of options to other than the default. By default they never throw clothing away... :P

I have no idea why they drop slightly-worn items, and haven't found any fixes for that aside from manual dump orders, sorry....

Thanks for the replies. I've always wondered about that with dwarves dropping clothing.

Thanks for letting me know about the barracks bug.

Unfortunately, I still have the problem with the Hospital not filling the chests. I have plenty of supplies. I can see them in stockpiles, but they don't want to pick them up. ...weird.
