Can't pick stone type
I'm sure I'm doing something dumb, but I can't figure out what it is. I'm trying to build a stone table and I'd like to build it out of something other than chert. When I click on the magnifying glass to select the material, it only shows that I have chert, even though when I open the stocks, it lists other stones available. When I try to select one of those stones in the stonecutter's task, it cancels the task because it says that I don't have any available. I've even tried setting the source for the workshop to the stockpile that has the (in one case) kaolinite, but then the order gets canceled for lack of kaolinite (even though, as I said, there's some listed in the stocks, and I can see one in the designated stockpile.

Can anybody help?

Thanks.

Andrew

Do you have a bunch of stuff disabled for non-economic use?

Not intentionally!

Maybe I do have stuff restricted? When some claystone showed up in the stockpile, that is eligible to be used for the table, but the kaolinite, gypsum, and lignite aren't. Looking at the wiki pages for them, they all can be turned into other stuff. So maybe they are being restricted, but I'm playing the steam version and I can find those settings in the Stocks panel.

The stocks screen is a hair misleading. It shows everything, whether accessible or not. And, as Deviant pointed out below, everything in use as well.

The stocks screen is a little quirky, it will continue to list items even if they're used in a construction. For instance, if you build a floors with all your granite stones, the stock screen will still show as having granite available.

But if your're saying there's available and unused items in stockpiles, I'm not sure if that's the issue.

U can specify which rock to use on the WORKORDERS screen.

If u dont know how to use Work Orders watch a tutorial video :)

Go to
Labors (y) > stone use > economic stone

From there you can enable specific stones for use in other tasks like constructions.

They are initially restricted because they're generally more useful as metals, alloys etc

Just to clarify some of the above, make sure the rock type you want is in an accessible stockpile, or the job order will fail. The best way to check is to visually inspect your stockpiles; the Stocks screen can be misleading, since, as mentioned, it shows items that haven't been brought to a stockpile yet, are in an inaccessible location, or which have been used in a construction.

This is it. Thanks so much!

I just wanted to make another point about stocks and item availability.

A great way to quickly find out the exact number of items accessible to your dwarfs for building or constructions, is to start designating a floor or wall construction.

So lets say you just got done building a massive tower of stone and glass blocks. You look in the stocks screen and it tells you there's ~2500 of each available. But you keep getting job cancellations because there's apparently none the dwarfs can use.

In this case the stocks screen is useless, and the construction item selection screen is FAR more accurate. It won't list the 2500 blocks already in use, only the ones that can be used for the task.

Those stones you are trying to use are most likely blocked from non-economic usage in your labor Stone Use panel.
