Dwarf Fortress

Having trouble finding soil underground
Is there a certain elevation it spawns in at? Cannot find it. I keep having my dwarves dig these long crisscrossing corridors throughout the map on different elevations and never finding soil for a farm.

Soil is either close to the surface or deep, in the cavern layers

The first few Z levels should be some kind of soil/clay/sand. Caverns are your next best bet. or you can rig up a flood over stone to make muddy floors at any level if you can get the water there.

How deep are the cavern layers? Does that just mean when my dwarves find a large cavern? Because I did find one and its filled with troglodytes and some weird snake people having a war.

It's all clay yeah, and I can't farm in that.

So, This is going to sound dumb...But... Have you tried to farm on it? Or did you just assume you can't because it's clay, Not soil?

'Cause my farms are on 'black sand', and 'sandy clay' and let me built and grow on them just fine.

Yeah when you get the notification about a "large cavern deep underground" or whatever. You should be able to wall off an area and make farm plots down there .

Did you know I am a fool? A ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ idiot? A complete dumbass?

I literally just assumed clay meant no farming and never bothered to check further. I have dug up half the ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ map looking for underground soil.

Thank you!

If your soil layer is too thin and you want your farm to be deeper, but not as deep as caverns, you can always make a muddy floor by dumping the water out of the buckets or slightly flooding the room:
